We recently replaced the 2.3l engine in a 1991 ford ranger 2wd Standard regular cab with a 1994 2.3l. Whoever removed the engine used pliers on the connector for the fuel return line and we couldn't get it together. So we put a hose on it and ran it to a jug so we could hear it run. It started after a 6-8 rotations and sounded great. Later we got the return line connected to the tank and started it up again, but it ran a bit rough, would not rev up, and the fuel tank pump ran continuously. We unhooked the return line and put the hose and jug back on and everything was fine. So we blew air through the tank return line. thinking obstructions, but it didn't help. Any thoughts out there?

Did the 91 still have two fuel pumps on it? If it did, does it still have the fuel reservoir on it? It's a large round black plastic thing in the fuel line before the high pressure pump on the frame rail.

Single pump in tank, no resevoir. Just talked to my grandson and he said it resolved itself, go figure. I'll recheck with my son-in-law later to make sure he didn't do something else.
