Vapor Separator Fuel Filter - Return line to tank?

thanks for the updates. good to know for sure. This was my theory also. will let you know what my testing is. Haven't had the truck out lately, but will keep you posted too.

cheers

Another update
My truck has ran perfectly on the non-ethanol gas! This has resolved my issue so far.

Carbs hate ethanol... Nothing new. There are ways to get it to work fine on ethanol though. Depends how cheap and easy non ethanol fuel is to get around you though. If it's easy to find and not expensive just keep running it!

The small line is not a return to the tank. There is a check valve that plugs into a rubber grommet on the top of the tank. As pressure builds in the tank, vapors are vented from the tank, through that line, where they’re stored in the charcoal canister until the computer opens the canister purge valve solenoid.

Nothing is connected to the carbon canister in your picture. Vapor lock happens when fuel in the fuel line becomes to hit and turns to vapor before entering the carburetor float bowl. It is very unlikely this is your issue.

so if there was a disconnect in between the small line and the charcoal canister it would cause the truck to sputter and act as if it’s not getting fuel?

No. That is just a emissions vent for the fuel tank. If it's disconnected it now just vents gas fumes into the atmosphere.

So then what do you think would cause my issue? It’s a 92 2.3l that runs good until it’s at about half a tank of gas then it starts sputtering and spitting and hesitating like it’s not getting fuel but as soon as I pull over to fill it back up to fill it runs great again…

essentially it hesitates and backfires on low fuel. Anything under 8 to 6 gallons it starts not wanting to act right until I fill it back up

That sounds like the pickup line in the tank has a hole. It would be pulling air and fuel. Essentially you are out of gas once the tank level drop below that point.

I’m assuming the pickup line is on the fuel pump right? Or sending unit to the fuel pump?

It looks like that may not be possible on a 92. I was thinking of the short section of rubber hose there. But in this picture it's above the pump. Which means it would be leaking pressure not pulling air in.

so what are you thinking it could be then?

I know the fuel filler neck has a small crack in it so when I fill the tank to fill it leaks a small bit like maybe a few drops but nothing major. Maybe that??

You could take it out and inspect it. I have had problems like that when the little white foam pickup sock had fallen off.

How do you know how many gallons are left? Do you know the capacity of your fuel tank? If you do, subtract 3 gallons off that. When you have 3 gallons left you are considered pretty much empty.

Not sure how Ford was running their fuel systems like this with no baffles in the tanks those years. The older trucks like mine had two fuel pumps and a fuel reservoir on the frame to avoid this problem.

The lack of any kind of baffle is why I still have two pumps. I'd rather only have one., but I don't wanna try to change tanks/sending units. Would hate to be climbing a hill and run out fuel halfway up with a quarter tank...

Apparently when any car or truck is in a extreme position, the fuel system can konk out. They sell these things on Amazon. You can't buy the single tank Ford reservoirs anymore, only the dual tank versions. So I have been recommending these from Amazon. They are for road racing and can be installed on any car or truck. They are called a "swirl pot"
