Ford recalls 700,000 vehicles Ranger included

I am in Iowa, we don't have traffic. And where being able to back up to trailers quickly and accurately with only mirrors is a right of passage. I don't use my radio knob to back up trailers either.

Hmm.....didnt know mirrors can fail in that manner

My left mirror shows me what's behind me to the left, but has a huge blind spot behind me.

My right mirror shows what's behind me to the right, but has a huge blind spot behind me.

My inside mirror shows me what's directly behind me, but has a huge blind spot below the top of the tailgate on a truck, or the top of the trunk on a car. That blind spot extends quite a ways back.

While the inside mirror fills in the blind spots of the outside mirrors, it does NOT allow me to see what is obscured by my tailgate or my trunk. The rear view camera will show me that blind spot.

If you can't see over a 83-11 Ranger tailgate... you need more phone books or your truck is lifted too much.

I didn't understand this part of the joke?

Ok that is rediculus...

Back up cameras are government mandated b/s that makes vehicles cost more. I ignore the one in my Escape and use the mirrors.
Ignoring it seems kinda dumb. You have this thing that lets you check if there’s anything directly behind you, but you don’t glance at it before you back up.
Just today I was at Lowes... I walked up to my truck and there was nothing behind it. When I went to back out of the spot, there was a cart behind me that couldn’t be seen in any mirror. I got out to move it and realized it was just slowly rolling past.

Consider it another tool in your arsenal to make you a better driver, not a item to solely rely on when backing.

I need a front camera some days- the other day I opened the gates to the backyard so I could drive the ranger out, one concrete block was still in the middle as a stop due to the winds the other day, I had went back into the house for something and forgot about the block, It cleared the I-beams but caught the transmission crossmember. I remembered what it was when I heard the noise.

Gravel dust makes them worthless.
So does road spray when it's raining.

They're also fairly useless for backing a trailer to me. I still use the mirrors mostly, but they're great for hooking up a trailer by yourself. Every vehicle I own now has a backup camera, including the '01 Ranger. Partly for HU upgrade and partly for the camera itself. I can't think of a valid reason not to have one, but I also don't think it should be a mandate.

As for dust and road spray, I've never had one so coated it was "worthless", but sure they're going to get dirty just like everything else. 2 seconds with a papet towel or the tip of your finger and you're good again.

I don’t have anything with one, 9 times out of 10 the one on my wife’s car is too dirty to use. Easy to clean but hard to remember when not in the car.

I never understood the trouble people have hooking up a trailer. Just line the middle of the trailer (i usually use the jack as a refrence point) with the bolts that hold the tailgate handle on. Back up till you feel a bump then roll forward about 2 inches.

Ill hit it dead nuts 9/10 times like that.

We need gooberment mandated back up beepers and strobe lights now too.
