Has anyone on here done a Ford Ranger v8 swap in California? How did you get the truck California smog Legal? I am looking to into this. How much more work is involved?
I am wondering if anyone has a truck that is all done that they would be willing to sell as well. I like the old boxie Ford Rangers so that would be what i would be looking for. I also would like one that is not 4x4 if that is even possible with the v8 swap. I am not a mechanic So i will have to pay someone to do the work for me.

Four threads under yours.

talk to your local smog refs.....

send pizza....donuts and coffee...ect first. good investment for cooperation. dont be afraid to tip people for service....

Wondering if i could get a diesel powered Ranger then do the engine swap or would i have to smog it then? 1997 diesels and older are exempt from smog.

i dont remember the weight class and ratings out there. likely still have an opacity test...but if its running correctly it wont be an issue.

i assume you would be using an older then 97 truck.

so using a 97 or newer TDI complete should be a non issue. though you may have to get a old enough truck back far enough that they were offered with diesels in the platform.

i have a humvee engine in my ranger. i can run the p47 workhorse platform up to 2005 as far as emissions are concerned...and there is another way to get current with the right weight rating for most places.

I think he means to use an older Ranger that came with a diesel and is licensed/registered as a diesel and put a V-8 into it and not tell the state it's been swapped.

Yes that is what i meant but i assume that is illegal but i can't find out online if it is legal or not

it is not legal if it is registered otherwise.

though...i might do that anyway. dont tell anybody.

I may sell my 2wd Ranger that Recently passed Bar testing if the price is right. I want to do another Ranger swap with either a Chevy Ls motor or a twin turbo V6.

I found a 2011 Ford Ranger regular cab 2wd v6 4.0 , It has 126000 miles on it. It is about 9000$. I might go look at it today but if i ever wanted to do a v8 swap would 2011 be a problem?

The Ranger has a fairly compact engine bay that will accommodate a smaller V8 engine, later engines have evolved to Dual/quad overhead cam units that are wider /taller and are not as easy to fit without some chopping up of the frame etc. This may be your only issue with a "Correct" California BAR swap.
If you want to do a V8 swap it would be easier with a pre 2001 Ranger.

I wouldn't want to chop any of the frame
So i wouldn't be able to put a 2011 ford explorer v8 into the Ranger? The motors are too big. They got bigger not smaller? I am not a mechanic and i would be paying someone to do the work for me.

i have a 6.x diesel v8 in my ranger. though a coyote is definitely wider.

that said a cyclone 6 isnt much different then swapping a coyote. an ecoboost 6 is even bigger with all of the tubing.

for reference...

this is my style engine next to a sbc.

impossible no....pia....yes..

i can change out my injectors and glowplugs faster then you can change the plugs in a stock ranger...

and i dont even have to open my hood.

though....when staying emissions compliant with a gas swap...your engine bay will be as shitty as a stock truck.

that said my truck is emissions compliant up to 2005 p47 workhorse standards.

Yes, most vehicle manufacturers have expanded the physical size of the engine, and the complex electronics are harder to figure out when swapping into a different vehicle.
Everything is possible with lots of money and time.
