Fan hit radiator with 1 1/2-1 3/4 clearance. How?????

You could run an electric fan to help keep this from happening again.

Il post pic of fan tmrw. My mechanic said i had two blades bent prior to installing fan. When pulling truck on trailor i gave it more gas than i did just revving engine and prolly caused fan to go forward hitting radiator. I just didnt have enough clearnce. Radiator support is good. Zero rust. Body bushings are new with body lift. Zero miles on them. Motor mounts are frm duff 4wd mounts and impact tight. As well as crossmember under trans. Radiator was tight. Motor didnt move forward. If anything it wouldve slid back as i wS pullin truck up on trailor the weight wouldve slid back. But i learnes very valuable lesson. Ima go get explorer radiator nxt wk and electric fan. Try again. Hope my screw up helps prevent this for someone else. 1/2-3/4 in gap between clutch and radiator and 1 gap or so frm fan blades is NOT enough room for blades.

that gap isn't enough for any engine driven fan, even the flat flex fans. I want to say they want at least an inch. If space is that tight you need electric fans. I believe the fullsize ford cars the like 90s crown vic and t-birds had nice size fans with good cfm.

The 4.6 have really good fans too, told they go for a lot too. One in my 4.6 third keeps it more then enough cool, almost too cool in the winter time.

I gather that the clutch was 1/4" away from the radiator while the fan was 1-1/2" away... yet it was the fan blade that hit the radiator.

Which tells me that the fan had some crazy flex.

OEM steel fan shouldn't have much flex at all though.

Unless the fan clutch or wp was going out and let it move around.

Im almost certain my fan blades was bent. But a clutch is designed to where if something hits the blades the water pump can spin and fan sit still. Mine didnt. Pretty sure my fan clutch was shot as well. Cuz the blade of fan would spin and dig if u tried to turn truck over. Im goin with electric fan setup. Can u guys measuree from ur radiator to ur water pump pulley shaft and tell me the distance u have and and how thick yals fans are. I like the ford taurus fan from 91-95. Its two speed electric fan. Its smaller than the crown vic and sucks an impressive amount of air as a puller. But i dnt knw if il have enough room.

You are missing the whole reason for a clutch fan, never meant to stop if hitting something. When cool or even warn, it disengages the fan from full spinning and then as it warms up or get hot, it engages the fan fully. Those fins on a radiator are really delicate, even dropping a fan on them would do damage.

I'll try and get you a measurement of my setup.

Do remember though I'm running a 5.0 explorer rad that was put inside my core support due to how far forward my engine is but I'm also running the long style water pump and factory FEAD that came on the 85-91 crown Vic and grand marque. I'm also running the fan off a painless wiring harness and it is triggered to turn on and off by a thermostaic temp sensor that is screwed into my upper rad hose neck.
