Ok guys im in the process of swapping a 1998 ford explorer motor (from a donor truck i have) into my 1998 ranger. I am just finishing up getting the details together and im running into an issue. Im trying to figure out the speedometer signal. and the fuel system. I think my best bet from what ive read in the 5.0 efi conversion tech section im gonna go to the junk yard and get a fuel rail and computer from a 99-01 explorer. rather tan run new lines and try to figure out the wiring issues for the speed sensor. Is there anything else i would need to get other than the fuel rail and injectors and pcm? In theory i think this will work. anyone else think it will? and is there anything else il have to change other than the rail and pcm? thanks in advance.

what i like about gettin a 99-01 computer that would take out my issues with the vss and fuel system.... thats why im thinking that would be easiest.

If you use a 99~2001 PCM with a 98 5.0 Ex engine, you also need the 99~01 fuel rails, injectors, engine harness, Camshaft Position Sensor and its Synchronizer drive. This should be completely compatible with the 98 Ranger fuel system.

The original 98~2000 Ranger speed signal is conditioned either through the GEM (RABS-equipped) or the 4WABS Module (4WABS-equipped). Either system will work as is with no mods required for these 3 years. For 2001+ Rangers, it gets a little more complicated.

One more thing: 98~2001 Explorers are equipped with PATS; 98 Rangers are not. That leaves you with a couple of options: transplant the PATS from the Explorer into the Ranger or turn PATS off in the PCM calibration.

i would be fine with sapping around fuel lines and parts from the 98 explorer but my main concern is getting the speedometer to work. because i know my truck does not have abs and i have not yet found a write up on here about getting a speedometer to work with the two different systems. Id rather use what i have and wire it up. has anyone ever wired a rear speed sensor system to work with the 98 explorer system?

Once again, you don't have to change anything from the rear axle all the way to the speedometer on a 98~2000. It will work as is with the 98 or the 99~2001 Explorer V8 swap.

Your 98 truck has either 4WABS or RABS. All Rangers from 1989 thruogh 2010 have ABS.

o ok thanks very much. i misunderstood
that makes things much nicer!!!

Having done the swap, i would recommend just running a fuel return line instead of trying to swap computers and fuel rails.

i was just gonna ask about that. I pulled the tank and rails out of the donor explorer i have last night. and there is no regulator on the explorer fuel pump. if i just run a return line with my factory 2.5 fuel pump will that work?

ok so i mounted the 5.0 in today and i was looking and it looks like the line that runs for my original 2.5 only has one line. so from what i read in another thread im gonna try and take the pump out and swap internals from the explorer into my ranger sending unit and run a return line. we will see how it works. I don't see why it wouldn't work....

so i started it last night. i didnt' run it very long but it ran great. all i did was ran the return line and swapped internals from the explorer pump to the ranger sending unit. im gonna get it together enough to hopefully drive it this weekend. il let you know how it goes.
