Exhaust question

Hello everybody
I’ve got a question. I’ve got an 87 2.9. There’s a hole or some kind of a port on the passenger side exhaust manifold. It faces towards the front of the truck, it’s kind of aimed at the front passenger tire. It’s been pouring out fumes, you can smell it while you’re driving and it’s made the engine bay/suspension underneath it dirty as hell. Sometimes it leaks oil, I think. What is this for? Am I missing something that’s supposed to attach to it? Can it be plugged?

It does not have threads, it looks as if a fitting might slide over it.

Check under your air filter box and see if there is a similar fitting. On carbs there was a tube to collect heated air from the exhaust to help the engine warm up quicker. Not sure about this, I've never worked on a 2.3.

It's a 2.9L, I believe you mean everywhere else...

In defense of the 2.9l, the oil leaks likely preserved the tin warm up tube housing.

It is possibly the tube carrying air from the air injection (smog pump) is missing. If I remember correctly, there is a bolt that would hold the tube in place with a bracket. The smog pump would be located on the passenger side near the bottom.

Ok, kidding aside PJ is correct, it's the warmup tube that would have originally had a tube running from there to the intake duct from in front of the radiator to the filter box, it had a vacuum operated temperature controlled valve where when it was cold would suck air from around the exhaust manifold to keep the throttle plate from literally icing up.

The oil is likely coming from the valve cover.

Yup, warm up tube fitting. You’re missing the rest of the bits for the system but it’s not really needed.

Exhaust fumes could be a cracked manifold or bad gasket or something, that warm up tube stuff is just an aluminum shell over the exhaust manifold. Oil is probably a valve gasket leak because that’s a super common problem

Alright so should I plug it or leave it be? The reason I ask is because I smell it when I drive and it’s making everything rather dirty. That and cooling…if it’s putting exhaust fumes directly into the bay won’t that heat things up?

Oh wait a second I see what you’re saying. That hole doesn’t lead to any exhaust right? So there shouldn’t be fumes coming out of it? I’m a little confused, sorry

Correct, there "shouldn't" be any exhaust there unless like LBF mentioned the exhaust manifold was broken or bolt broke or gasket blew out or any combination of that...

I would take that thing off so you can inspect the manifold and bolts...
