mainly just ranting from blown eardrums, but there is a good point IMO.

ever notice that vehicales have to have emmission controling devices, but most motorcycles (mainly choppers but there are sportbikes like this too) have no emmission controling device or noise suppression at all. i was wondering why is this? cars usually have long exhuast with a muffler and cat (unless modified which is supposed to be a no-no anyway lol) but bikes have nothing but maybe 3ft of straight pipe (maybe a sound suppressor, but nothing really at all). seems to me with gas going up and people riding and buying more bikes now there would be some sort of emmisssion/noise laws to cover this.

There trying I know Harley had to switch to EFI and there looking into cats and what not, as for the aftermarket mods I guess they don’t care about motorcycles yet.

according to the insurance companies, motorcycles are still considered a form of recreational vehice, rather than a regular vehicle. most rules on your cars and trucks(aside from traffic laws) dont apply to bikes for that reason.

motorcycle riders put loud pipes on because of idiot drivers who say"o i didnt even see the motorcycle when i pulled out in front of it" it makes them more "noticeable" to people with their heads so far up their asses, they can taste stomache acid

sorry if i seem pissed off
but both parents ride
as well, iv had 2 friends nearly die because of idiots in cars

loud pipes save lives
thats all there is to it

I don't ride, seen to many bikes get run off the road on purpose while growing up. I also don't mind loud pipes, as long as they are done with good taste. The same with cars and trucks. Nothing worse than a honda or toyota with a weedwacker muffler!!! There are some on the road that are way to loud. With that being said, once gas prices get so high, bike riders will increse in numbers. Once the noise starts bothering our law makers, rules will be made.

There are laws for noise and emissions both. All Jap bikes have had some form of emissions control since the Early 80s. Harley riders seem to consider themselves exempt from noise laws and like the ricers believe that loud equals fast and powerful. All bikes have engraved on the original exhaust that it's illegal to remove or modify. It's more a matter of selective enforcement of long existing noise laws.

It's just like you guys that are putting flowmasters on your trucks. Anything that isn't factory approved is most likely an illegal modification in most states.

My XS1100 is straight piped, custom made it myself, passed emissions easily, the guy didn't even question it.
It's loud, but like others said, it's so that idiot drivers in mini vans know where I'm at as they're most likely thinking "Who in the F#%% is making all that racket?".

:3gears:

My '76 Honda has a label on it that says not to remove the muffler because of noise and spark arresting.

But I do enjoy the sound of a Harley with pipes, I ain't gonna complain about them.

Actually, you are not suppose to remove any muffler system on a motorcycle. But the laws are so light for it, people do it anyways. My Kawasaki KLX250s is chocked with the EPA crap. For starters, it has a smug pump (which injects clean air into the exhuast to burn off any extra fuel). Then it has a 3-way CAT muffler (which will get hot enough to burn skin off, I know). Then on top of of all those, it has the Forest Service Spark Asrester and is only 80db at loudest. Also the carb is set lean, A/F mixture screw is capped (easy fix).

But even so, its still dirt tearing, mud slinging, dirt/street machince. Gotta love DualSports. :yahoo:

There are emissions requirements for small engines. You will see more emissions equipment on motorcycles and other things with small engines in future. The US is actually behind in this. A handful of European countries, as well as Asian countries, are going to make emissions reduction mandatory in a few years.

It has nothing to do with driving skill, or the attitude of the person in the car. Due to size, motorcycles simply aren't as visible as cars, and in many cases, the dude on the motorcycle is not going with the flow of traffic.

Loud pipes aren't going to change much either. It is difficult to tell what direction the noise is coming from, and it blends in with other environmental noise.

The best thing someone on a motorcycle can do is use lighting.

i actually have a bike now
its an 81 maxim 65o with what my dad calls the blender
i actually like it
it sounds like a sick f1 car, and its loud enough to wake up people in the next state when i get on it

and it will be staying
its much safer on a blacked out, chromeless bike

ok but on a motorcycle, by law, your low beams(atleast) are on at ALL TIMES, theres no way around it(no way to turn it off)
and one friend was riding at the speed limit, and ended up in the back seat of a small car via the window
car drivers simply dont pay attenton or dont care
and this bike was hard to miss
and the worst part is,the guy kept driving

as for the other guy
i have almost no simpathy, he was doing about 90 and a car pulled out(while he was being chased by the cops, like that isnt noticeable) and swerved right off the road and into a tree

You don't see two stroke motorcycles on the road anymore. Emissions killed them. (sadness) Loud bikes are silly. All they do is annoy people. They do not help bikes get noticed until they have already gone by. Hardleys are the worst. It is just a cry "look at me"! Everyone knows a Hardley is just an accessory to go with the assless chaps anyway. LOL!

Sorry, IMO that style (the Harley style) of bike is the best looking style of bike to get.

I will pass eagerly on any crotch or chotch rocket, they do very little for me. I would rather ride my old enduro Honda than either of them.
