emmission controls, why not motorcycles too?

I think with all the people that are starting to ride motorcycles around, drivers are going to start being more cuatious of them.

My dad's KLR 250 (dualsport bike) has a cat. on it, as well as a bunch of other missions crap which is on there specificly for Californina, but was sold in WA...

What I don't understand is WAY a motorcyle needs emissions devices, other than a muffler... That KLR250 get 80+mpg.. Does it really need to polute less?? That is damn good milage, it isn't poluting very much at all..

Just for the hell of it, check out this video, it pretty interesting.
(yes, it relates to parts of this thread)

Loud pipes don't save lives. But they do get you noticed faster. Actually, loud sudden noise save lives, the horn is for one. Someone locking the tires during a hard brake. Constant loud noises, the brain will phase out. Sudden loud noise make your attention divert to its source direction.

High MPG does not imply low emissions.

i think its funny, most of you are saying how loud and obnoxious motorcycles are, but thats the point so you notice them on the highway, so you know they are there, thats how loud pipes saves lives

they do not get you noticed from any traffic hazards. I never hear even the loudest pipes until the are next to me. The sound shoots backwards. Unless you are cruising your loud-ass bike backwards they do not improve safety.

Once people that believe the loud pipe BS spewing from half-assed riders mouths take the time to educate themselves and read the Hurt Report I cannot stress this enough. Good riders and skills save lives. Loud pipes get attention from skanks in front of bars and piss off your neighbors. That is it. Period. You may disagree. But I am a motorcycle safety advocate and I have studied crash data extensively. I WILL tell you that you are wrong.

Here is a link to 1000 others that will tell you the same.

I am Jason there as well.

Wow there are so many people here that say what they would do if they were a cop. Well guess what you can become one. Almost every major city in America is need on police officers. So every body that say if I was a cop, would shut up and put there ass in a cops uniform there may not be the need that there is now. But then again there is a pysic test you would have to pass and that may be diffcult for a few of you. Sorry just sick of hearing what people would do if they were a cop. :pissedoff:

Says the 16yr old with no license and no clue. Sorry, I don't intend this to be mean, you are just wrong. All loud exhaust accomplishes on the street is to annoy others and give our sport a black eye. That is TRUE whether be street bikes, dirt bikes, trucks or cars. Hell, even airplanes have mufflers. Every wonder why?

but you forget that im a 16 year old with 2 parents that ride
and my own bike

and iv had a guy i know, look rick petco(or orange county choppers)in the eye and tell him that i am the most knowlagable, and best self tought motorcycle mechanic he knows

comeing from a lifelong rider

so dont go mouthing off about my age
i know more about bikes than you could dream to

What is the proper spring rate for a 250lb rider on a 45 lb bike? :D

yeah that comment was before i took the motorcycle safety class, through the Motorcycle safety foundation and started riding more, but basically loud pipes are nice but they project the sound towards that back of the bike. i also learned that loud pipes are actualy causing riders to loose places they can ride.

further more my 2003 has baffles to quite it some but no emission, but it get alot better gas milage than my f150 and it has a dual spark head(like the 2.3,2.5 limas in the ranger) so my 2 cyclinders have 4 spark plugsthats about it for emissions, i wuold also say, the newer bikes are starting to come out fuel injected, vs carb like my 03 model, so that should help significantly

I just finished the course through the Parks & Recreation dept. here, and the instructor said the same thing. I mean if they can't hear a truck or something laying on the horn over their cel phone or rap music, then they won't hear your bike. Personally, mine's not real loud; I'd like it just a shade louder, just enough to hear the engine at highway speed, not enough to go deaf!

dude, seriously
just because sport bike guys think loud pipes are bad, doesnt mean there right
for all

guys around here(and girls) love loud pipes, because you have allot of car drivers with their heads in a certan crack that love to pull out in front of bikes

yes , it can get annoying to people they pass, but deal with it, and youre attentoin went to the bike, didnt it.
and some guys do this simply to sound like a big bad biker and show off their 30,000 bucks in chrome.
others run them for the attenton of drivers

yes they do help out, yes they do annoy
ans yes , my family, friends and myself will continue to run loud pipes
because they do save lives
(and i have confirmed this in the opinion of sevral EMTs)

and WTF is a 45 pound bike, a freakin huffy
screw croth rockets, too easy to get stupid and killed

Car stuff on bikes...

BMW bikes have cats on them and I'm sure others do to.

My 87 FXR has a charcoal canister on it and it wouldn't be a real Harley with a pussy exhaust .

I was stopped at a CHP safety checkpoint years ago while on my 72 Norton Commando and they did a DB check of my stock exhaust, it passed. My friend was riding a Vincent Black Shadow and failed.

Loud pipes save lives.... and sound cool too. :headbang:

loud pipes do not save lives. I have seen more people change lanes almost hitting a harley or something loud than anythig else. Im not expert but I have been riding for almost 10 years. My dads bike has aftermarket exhaust so its louder than stock, and guess what... more people have almost changed lanes into him than I ever had happen while I was riding a stock honda rebel. Loud pipes are to show off, not safety. my dads bike isnt even that loud but after a long ride my ears bug me, I can only imagine what its like on a harley with straight pipes.

as for emmissions, bikes have had cats for a couple years, fuel injection is getting more widespread, and why do you think so many bikes are jetted lean from the factory? like a GS500 they benifit so much from a jet kit that its not funny, but they are done that way for emissions reasons.
