hey guys,

i have a truck that is pretty rough the past few days and last night it just died driving down the road. Its a 1989 ranger 2.9L 2wd and its in pretty good shape. when i hook up the battery some lights flicker on/off and sounds like relays are clicking with the key out of the ignition... with the key on everyting is normal until i go to crank it and it cranks but it continues to crank even with the key out until i dissconnect the batt terminal. Already replaced the ignition switch so i know thats good. any help is greatly appreciated...

thanks in advance

ryan

Start with replacing the starter solenoid, it is on the side fender well.
Follow the red battery cable, the larger one if there are two, it attaches to the solenoid.
Look at it, see if it has 3 posts or 4 posted, take a picture if you can, then hit the parts store, usually $10-$15.

Pretty much all the power for the truck is connected to the solenoid, and when they get old they can get sticky, so starter motor continues to turn even when you don't want it to.

If the wires on the solenoid are corroded then electrical power could be intermittent, so I would replace that first and then go from there.

sounds like a dirty bastardhead ground or grounds issue. the relay is likely bad for sure.

make damn sure the pcm grounds are solid.
