Do you have your overdrive off for normal driving ?

My dad once said for me to have my rangers overdrive and my f-150s overdrive in the off position for normal driving like driving to work and back home and for local driving and i try not to go faster than 40mph when overdrive is off. Im 31 years old with mild autism and im a good truck owner i maintain and take care of my trucks ?

I run O/D all the time.

Only time to have it off IMO is when your towing heavy.

If you don’t have a gear hunting issue with the over drive on, leaving it on won’t hurt anything. Neither will leaving it off, though you might notice more fuel consumption.

At 40 mph, I doubt the torque converter is locking up.

At a certain speed the torque converter, which links the engine to the transmission, locks the engine and the transmission together to reduce loss of power to the rear wheels and fuel consumption.

As far as the difference in fuel usage, I don’t know. At that low of a speed, the torque converter might not lock up anyway. So, the over drive being on or off wouldn’t make a difference.

Since all of my most recent vehicles have had manual transmissions and the transmission in the 2019 is very different from the older automatic transmissions, I have no direct experience. I just know the basic operation and theory on how automatic transmissions work.

I just leave it on because thats how its supposed to operate.

Plus the only O/D auto i got is mated to a big ol 7.5L V8, it would take off in 4th from a stop lol.

Someone once said use overdrive only if you are driving at highway speeds like 65mph ??

What year is your 7.5L v8 and is it in a f-250 or f-350, why would your truck take off from a stop in 4th gear

O/D generally kicks in around 45mph unless you are really into the throttle.

Its in a 97 F250 HD. It would take off in 4th because it has mounds of low end torque.

in my 02 ranger fx4 off road i have had the O/D off and reached 45 mphs and i didn't see the rpms go up and i tryed the same speed at 45mph with the O/D on and the rpms were at the same numbers.

Are you the type that likes to press the gas pedal to the floor from a stop.

I have always turned my overdrive off as soon as i start my ranger, do you think 35 mph is to slow for normal streets because that is my streets speed limit around here is 35mph, i noticed a rpm jump but it wasn't a huge amount maybe 50-100 rpm ?

Do you wish your f-250 had 4wd

You don't need to touch the overdrive switch -at all- under normal driving conditions. The transmission can handle shifting in and out of that gear range just fine on its own (usually). The only time you press the O/D off button is when you know that it's shifting more often in and out of O/D than you'd like. Towing conditions, mountain driving, etc. All those extra shifts help create unwanted heat.

I will then let you know if i notice a difference between having the overdrive on and off. I never tow anything and i rarely go into the mountains but i do live on a 30 degree stretch but i don't live in the mountains. Is unwanted heat a bad thing.

High amounts of heat kills auto trannys.

Sometimes yes i wish it was 4wd.
