My credo
A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
I replaced my injectors sure thats what was causing it...but it wasnt. It has more power so thats a win....

Anyways...
Im getting a missfire on acceleration, and now im noticing it cruising as well. Initially i blamed the fuel system but i checked pressure (rigged it up to see while driving) and it stayed between 32-40psi whole time.

So i pulled codes again....it passes the KOER test with flying colors (code 11).

KOEO Im getting a 14 and 18. Its showed 18 forever (both are memory codes) but the 14 is new. I read this usually indicates a dying TFI and\or PIP. I intially ignored 18 because my ranger shows it to and always ran fine.

It does make sense as the issue seems to get worse in hotter weather or after some driving. In the morning when its 58* and its sat all night it runs great untill about 12mi in...then itll miss some. After its spent 5hrs in the sun and its pushing 80 it gets to missing real bad after a few miles on the trip home.

So today i pulled over and pulled the SPOUT connector out and it ran like total shit as soon as i tried to accelerate..and not just nutless...i mean it sounded like muffled machine gun fire. Base timing is 10* . I made it 100yards or so and stopped and plugged it back in.

So...i know what the SPOUT does at a basic level...but i read once thats pulled it relies totally on the PIP to fire the ignition and pulse the injectors?

So based on this is it pretty safe to say the PIP is junk? I did jump the gun and order a distributor for it after a bit of research on the codes. The distributor in it looks pretty new but who knows.

Sorry for the rambling...i think im on the right track but just want some verification.

Did you buy a NEW distributor or a "rebuilt" distributor? Cardone does a great job of cleaning up the outside of their rebuilt distributors, but that is about all they do. So you end up with someone else's problems. Your only hope is that they turned in their distributor and there was nothing wrong with it.

There was a known problem with the early PIP hall effect units. I fixed my Cardone "rebuilt" distributor by installing a new PIP pickup inside the distributor. I paid over $80 for that rebuilt distributor, but it had a old PIP unit in it. I am sure it tested good cold on the test bench, if they even tested it.

No its not cardone...and its a new one

new. yeah. probably the issue.

sure there is a potential for that. corrosion to a point could be an issue.

could be a mechanical issue with valves

Guess we'll see what the distributor does.

It pulls good vaccuum, and idles smooth.

steady vac signal?

might just be a shitty wire.

steady vac signal?
yeah...it holds steady around 19-20...actually steadier then my ranger. Actually to be honest this engine seems alot healthier then my ranger....1000mi in and oil level has barely dropped (it does leak a bit) and its still honey colored...my rangers is black within 500 lol.

Thats my next step. I really didnt wanna dig into that and find nothing.

Without the SPOUT you'll have 0 ignition advance.

Codes 14-18 are usually caused by ignition pickup, module or wiring between the module and PCM.

I was under the impression that without the spout, the ignition advance is locked at 10° btdc.
Locked at whatever the distributed is set to.

Right. But even with no advance it shouldnt missfire so bad it barely moved lol.

I expected gutless.
