Do Ford 4x4s suck?

My 4x4 Ranger is great in the snow. Granted, slapping on a set of the Destination A/T's helped bunch. Then again, a good drive can help out as much if not more than a 4x4.

A couple of years ago, I drive my dad's 2wd Chevy 1500 all winter. I worked at the local airport, and sometimes, leaving a 3:00 AM (had to be at work by 4:30) the roads weren't plowed yet. Well, I got in to work (and I lived further away) easier than some of my coworkers with AWD or FWD, who lived MUCH closer.

Short answer: Ford 4x4's DO NOT SUCK! It's the drivers who suck sometimes.

Shit, I drove a corolla in unplowed roads leaving work at ~3am.
Scarey shit being in a little corolla on unplowed roads or with plows being the only other thing on the road. One time I was following a plow, and it broke down! Stuck behind a broken plow for an hour or two waiting for another plow to come so I could get home.

With the ranger, I wouldn't of had to wait for the plow.

Well like everyone said it all depends on your setup. My 84 ranger has L/S in the rear with manual hubs and Tcase and a manual transmission and it get through the snow no questions asked... I don't have studded tires on it so when it hits Ice I'm screwed but everything else its awesome. When its Icy i just slap on my chains and good to go. those chains are vicious! Went through the ice and started ripping up the asphalt underneath one time. :D

My other truck is a 99 with open front and rear vacuum hubs and an electronic t case. I don't like it in 4x4 its really un predictable I can just be chuggin along in 4x4 and the rear end will just slide out. then 4x4 comes back in and its fine. I normally don't need 4x4 except on steep hills with it though, and i put some nice studded wintercat SST's on it and it rocks.

I love my 84 though, back in high school it snowed about 2 ft while everyone was in class, when school got out everyone started trying to drive out and home but found it wasn't gonna work. even the big jacked up 4x4's were having trouble. I just popped mine in 4 lo, shot right out and a bunch of people asked for rides and a tug to get out.I spent about half an hour pullin trucks out so they could get going.

Also had to pull out my friends one time... One of my friends went up this long trail and slid off the edge about 2 miles in... I had to drive up and yank him out. He had a chevy 1500. Actually I had to yank him out like 4 times cause he kept going back into the ditches. My other friend who is always boasting how his dodge cummins was the best at everything and got like 30 mpg... till he got stuck, I was the last one he called too. He got stuck in a big ditch about 6 ft deep and already had 2 other trucks try and pull him out. I drove over and saw it and it was pretty in there... I slapped on my chains anyways thinking that I might not be able to pull this off put the straps on and got ready to go. 3 other trucks pulled up and asked if I needed a real truck to get it out. Pssssssshhhhhh no this is a real truck (2 newer dodges and a chevy) they ended up staying to watch just incase i needed help. We start going, I threw it in 4 lo and just started crawling then the line got taunt and my chains dug in so i just eased on it and it came right out on the first try... Needless to say they shut up when I asked them who had the real truck now?
