disciplerocks's B2 build thread

And no I dont have a dial indicator.

Don't put it back together without one. The gears are worn, and the backlash has changed from when it was originally setup. You'll never know what it was now. At least with an indicator, you'll be able to set it to the top end of the "new gear setup" spec and be close.

There's a reason people pay other people to set up gearsets. Don't be a dumbass.

Even a cheap one from harbor freight is better than nothing.

I wasnt going to do it myself originally. But it sounded like adjusting backlash wasn't a big deal.

Bought an indicator on my way home today. Measured .012-.013ish.

How's this for pattern?

You won't change the pattern much. Don't worry about it. When I set up gears I read the pattern and adjust pinion depth accordingly. You're not changing the pinion depth. Once its pretty much dialed in I'll set the 'lash and recheck - it rarely changes.

.012 may be a bit tight, but check the spec for your rearend/gearset and see what it is. For reference, mine measured .015 when I swapped in the welded carrier a couple weeks ago.

You can use the shims you've got, just move them from one side to the other. I can't say what you should do without knowing what the BL was before you removed it. You'd probably be fine with the .012 lash, but if it were me, I'd try and pull it out closer to 16.

I'd try and find another source other than the Yukon install book too. For some reason I'm thinking it's not 100% accurate. Not sure why I think that, but I think I remember reading somewhere not to use it for some reason.

The other places I have read said 8-15. I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks man.

Ford spec is .008" - .015" (preferred .012" - .015")

I always try to get it tighter rather than looser. My 8.8 is set up at .009".

.007 to .015 is the tolerance for the 8.8's...anything .010 to .015 is acceptable and expected for used gears...

Whoops, missed the last page..lol I thought the low spec was 7, not 8....too many damn numbers running around in my head....

I can never remember... I just pulled up the online manual at home here and looked.

Setting backlash is the opposite of air and sex. It's only a big deal if you are the poor bastard that gets to do it.

My book says .011-.016 and 60ftlbs for the ringer and cap bolts.

I just put new 31 spline axle shafts and carrier in my mustang and used the same gears. Backlash was .010 before and after.

Your book is wrong.....70-85 ft lbs for both the ring gear and cap bolts.
