Yep, semi float axles suck, thats why SVT is upgrading to full float :D

Hey Rick, any tips on removing the ring gear without damaging anything?

Pull all the bolts out of the carrier, then with the ring gear facing down, take a punch that is smaller than the threads of the ring gear, and drive the ring gear off the carrier, using two holes 180* from each other on the ring gear (The ring gear is tempered and won't hurt beating on it, just make sure your punch is not a tight fit inside the holes risking damaging the threads (IE, If your bolts are 9/16, use a 3/8" punch, etc)...

Thanks Rick. My punch has walked off, but a small bolt worked just fine.

Been a crappy few days, but I finally got back in the garage today and got it welded up, ring gear swapped, and carrier installed. I reused the shims that were in there and it feels like a perfect fit, but I've never setup gears before. Going to try to find some marking compound tomorrow. O'riellys didn't have any.

if you cant find the marking compound, i've heard of people using lipstick

Good idea. I'll have to see if the woman has some.

Worked. Thanks. Looks like I need to increase the backlash.

You can't tell by looking. Put a dial indicator on it. Even then, you don't know what it should be because you didn't measure it before removing the old carrier, or did you?

I doubt it, he don't have one...

gotta bust your balls on this one, made me laugh....being able to tell the backlash by looking at a ring gear with lipstick on it :D

Saved me a trip to the parts store. And no I dont have a dial indicator.

no indicator? you need to be able to rotate the pinion flange about 1/4" to the left or right once the nut is torqued down before it turns the ring gear.....(check the pinion slack on a newer vehicle to get an idea how much the flange should rotate before it turns the ring-gear while the vehicle is in nuetral--BLOCK the wheels first!)

of course....there's no substitute for an indicator
