debate: ranger vs. tacoma...

Take a look at top gear's "killing a toyota" segment from a few years back. That's one of the pre-tacoma pickups. You can find it on youtube fairly easily.

I'll keep it simple. The Tacoma and Ranger are both quite capable trucks. the key difference is the price. My ranger was half as much as a comparable Toyota. So that's what I bought.

in back to the future appeared a pretty nice toyota truck too.
for me the Ranger looks better and yeah it was cheapier so i went Ranger

yeah the ones with the 22R engine and solid axle 4WD
hell even the 20R

now your getting into the 80s models i have driven the 3.0 in my ranger and yota and the 3.4 and 4.0 in the newer yotas and i would have to say the best motors for reliabletiy and toughness would be the 22re although i wouldnt mind having the 22ret which is the turob version of the 22re and they only came in 4runners with the removable top. after having 2 yotas before my fords i would have to i had better luck with my yotas than i did with my ford i mean i should not have had to replace my cats on my 2007 ranger and never touched them on my 1990 yota. the only downside to having a pre95 yota is engine space they cram those motors in those little trucks and make it a pain to just replace spark plugs. i have to say i liked the layout of the yotas its almost like sitting on the floor which i liked because it felt like i had more control but the only real downside to that is when you lift your truck you will need seat risers to see over the hood and me being 6'2 without my work boots on i had to raise my steering wheel to get in the truck and after the lift it was really hard to get in without busting my knees. so far though after having a yota 3.0 and a ranger 3.0 i think i would stick with my rangers 3.0 more room to work on it and easier to work on. now like people were saying about yota frames i personaly never had a problem with mine i took great care of my truck after i went mudding i would spend a good part of the next day cleaing out from under my truck to keep it from rusting out from under my feet. the only reason why i would go back with toyota is they are so narrow im not sure of width size compared to my ranger they should be about close but my trun radius on my ranger is amazing my yota really didnt have one i really didnt have one after my 35s. but the after market on the yota is unreal. the rangers is well somewhat lacking. and the pre95s are easy to work on when it comes to suspension and drive line work on now for the newer ranger i think there is just to much electronics for me i would rather have to get my teeth pulled than work on. like i have siad before each truck has their pros and cons and each truck fits everyone differently and everybody either has bad luck or good luck with each truck just like every other truck on the road.

i believe some trucks had the turbo 22Ret
i saw a couple extcab pickups 86-88 perhaps racing on street tracks
those were some pretty fast trucks.
both had turbo badges from factory

im not that tall, so thats why i dont like the toyota-sit on the floor seats lol
ehll i need nerf bars now that i lifted my ranger

I do prefer the clutch on the ranger better then the taco. My left foot is not soft enough for the taco.

I'd like to add, some may not like it but I gotta say it.

Ford, American made, Union made. I will never own a foreign auto no matter what.

Yeah, I build F-150s in Kansas City. Local 249.

I don't wanna start and crap or anything. I'm just proud of Ford and everything they do. Toyota can kiss the fattest part of my ass.

Just my opinion, still wanna be civil here.

then keep opinions and comments on the union out of this thread, or you will start crap.

My 2000 Tacoma was closer to a Hilux than it is to the current Tacoma (2004+?) and was a solid truck and I would not hesitate to buy another (from outside the salt belt ....... way outside). I also would not hesitate to buy a T-100........

except i hate the seats, and I drove the thing 200 miles a day..... seats make a difference .....if i do buy another i will rip the seats out and put in Peterbuilt seats.

My Tacoma has 70k on it. My Ranger has 50k. The Tacoma is quieter and rides nicer. The Ranger fits places the Taco can't since it isn't as wide. The Tacoma has way more power and a 6 speed manual that Ford apparently hasn't heard of. The Ranger is easier for my kids to get in to. The Tacoma is easier for them to actually ride in. The Tacoma has needed $232.12 in repairs. The Ranger has needed $1918.26. No labor, I do all the work myself.

Maintenance. Oil changes, Coolant and trans fluid per manufacturers recommendations
Tacoma. $721.12 in 70k
Ranger. $671.56 in 50k

The Tacoma did cost me about 2 grand more than the Ranger but is also worth about 3 grand more now. If short term financial goals rule the roost for you, the Ranger wins. If you think long term, or aren't a mechanically inclined person with the time to fix things, the Tacoma will come out on top.

PS. Ranger numbers may be a tad skewed. I bought many of the parts for that truck via Rock Auto (tax free and cheaper) since I had the Tacoma as my DD. The Tacoma parts were sourced locally, same day.

Peterbilt uses a ton of seats from Bostrom. They are sweet. You should sit in the new International ProStar Premium. That is my new work truck. The seat just hugs you all over.

I am thinking about the Peterbuilt seats from my 1999 379 pete that got totaled.... they were just the stock mongrammed cloth seats that came in 99. best seat I have used, they are in the Kenworth right now.

Being union has NOTHING about how the vehicle is built. So to get this out of the way, my dad works as a Machinist in the UAW.

I don't give a Shit where something is made, as long as the VALUE, the QUALITY, and a COMPETITIVE PRICE is there!

Do I buy USA made product? Yes, but I don't give a damn if it's made by unionized "contracted" employees. If Ford or any other company was "so great" you WOULD NOT BE UNIONIZED!!

Unions are typically created when a company treats the Employees poorly. (or a Union cons the workers to sign those papers and cons everyone to believe that a union is good!) Unions really have no place in modern America, but many places around the world need unions desperately.

Unions did improve our lives, but because of free trade, the Unions here are at a great disadvantage, when competing with someone making $.25 a day in Asia. The Unions need to be over there.

I work for a non union company, they treat us good, and yes we build parts for Toyota(NOT accelerator pedals!!) I work for my employer, not for the Union, nuff said.

I am very satisfied that Toyota is non union, but that is not why Toyota is better than Ford, Toyota just has the Quality, the Value and competitive prices, Something others has been struggling with for years(and more so with Chrysler)

I appreciate your opinions on the Union but we're not here to hijack the thread on something that can be debated til were all blue in the face.

I will say, how's your health insurance? That's something our Union has gotten for us that the company has been trying to take away for some time now. And in this day and age, that's a big thing.

Back to the original topic. The old Toys were always a great truck and have been appreciated for years whereas the Rangers just didn't quite get the following those Toys got. From an off-road stand point of course. Solid axles, light weight and decent torque will do that. The TTB has been hit or miss. Some like it for it's IFS qualities while others feel it's junk. The 4.0 Ford motor has been around for how long now? It's a great motor albeit with some quirks but I'd say the best 6 cylinder motor since the 300 straight 6. I've always known, living here in the rust belt, that Ranger frames were stonger than Toy frames. Have seen quite a few just fold in half. But the Tacos don't have all those attributes that made the little Toys of the 80s great. They're IFS and have all that newfangled technology that keeps you from really being able to work on them. Or you hafta buy out of the TRD catalog to get your hopup parts. And that gets pricey.

Sorry, I may be biased with the fact that I hate Toyotas, and all other foreign cars, but I see it the same as donating billions of dollars to countries that we've blown up, or countries in need instead of spending it here, in America, where people are living on the streets, crowding the unemployment lines, and can't get medical care. I want to keep the money that I spend in America.

Let's see if that ruffles some feathers.

Toyotas have been IFS since 1984.... we had 2 of those back to the future toys on the ranch....... I always thought the TTB rangers were better off road.... compared to the IFS toys.

Compare the 2000 Tacoma IFS to the 2000 Ranger IFS ....... Toy wins..... I looked at a 2000 ranger when I bought the Tacoma, and if it had not been for Toyota offering huge rebates I would have bough the Ranger, but the Toyota had better ground clearance, bigger tires, quicker, better mileage...... but I hated the seats, and lack of access to the rear seat...... but with the rebates it made the tacoma and the Ranger the same price, the choice was easy...... plus the Toyota had 5spd trucks on the lot, getting a 5spd from Ford is like pulling teeth from a rabid bear.........

glad you liked working for the union, please post that in the Union thread.

and Toyota employs more Americans that Ford. Toyota of America is an American corporation with American investors. Toyota contributes to local communities and local economies.

Last Ford I bought was made in Mexico.

chill guys were going a bit off road again...
about seats, dunno but i feel my 99 ranger seats more comfortable than my moms 03.
maybe thats why newer ranger seats feel almost the same as tacoma seats, dunno seems like ford made seats harder on newer rangers
