Hey guys been toying with the idea of a SAS for a long time when a buddy of mine decided he was scrapping his 80's waggy. Ill be picking up the D44 out of it, not sure on the exact year but it does not have the 2 piece long sided shaft.

Anyways, what have you guys been using for driveshafts? there's an IFS 97 explorer at my local u-pick that has a double carden front shaft i was thinking of pulling, not sure if it will be long enough though. What are most of you guys running? Also, where do i go about finding one of these neapco adapters?

Welcome! To be honest, that might need to be one of your last thoughts when doing a SAS.

Also, you may want to reconsider the waggy 44. If it's free, awesome. But otherwsie you may want to try and find the High Pinion out of a early bronco. Most people put a lot of money into the SAS (I'm a cheapo and I'm still around 800 or so) and if you're gonna dump that much cash in, I'd say do it right the first time ;) If you go waggy, you'll have a weird bolt pattern and it isn't as strong as one of the later model HP Ford 44s.

Check it here (scroll down to Jeep Wagoneer Dana 44): http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Dana44.htm

EDIT: PS, I'm not sure what I'm running for a driveshaft on mine yet because I want to check where I'm positioning the axle first :)

Early bronco's are Low Pinion axles

Weird being 6 on 5.5? It's more common then the big ford 5 lug these days. Chev and Toyota ran it for years. Strength is a moot point, you'll be breaking hubs and shafts long before destroying a gear set.

with a Waggy 44 it is easy to use leafs to mount them....grab the leafs with it if ya do....

as for the different bolt patterns, either swap over to the large Ford bolt pattern, or better yet....get adapters for the rear to change over to 6 x 5.5...like Whalstrom said, Chevy and Yota wheels are stupid easy to find reasonably priced....

as for the front driveshaft, I know around here it is relatively cheap to have a shaft retubed for whatever length you need...like what was said earlier, that will be one of, if not the last thing you need on the swap....

i’m 1400 into my SAS and rear lift, and i aint done yet. but the last thing i am thinking about is a driveline, b/c it changes everytime you consider moving your axle forward or back, and with what spring ride and flex height you get with used waggy springs, or weaving in some add a leafs.

I'm running my stock drifeshaft. I shortened it about 3/4" to make it fit. It is the slip yoke shaft that comes with the BW 1350 t case. As others said the front driveshaft was the last thing on my priority list though. Your front axle need to be set to get accurate measurements. As far as u joints; I used a 1350 to 1310 adapter u joint from broncograveyard

thanks for all the replys! I know what your saying about driveline being the last thing to consider, was just curious more or less as to what over people are running as I have almost everything else planned out, but plans do change lol.

I will be taking the leafs with the axle and will add or remove leafs from the pack as seen fit when i get it all together. I also will be getting a flat top knuckle with the axle, going to go with a crossover style steering for now using a yota box, if i can ever track one down.

What is the best fab site to buy misc. tabs and brackets from? any decent ones in canada? I know of ballistic and ruffstuff but have never ordered from them before.

@wahlstrom1

Eh, my bad. I keep thinking only about the 78-79 big bronco as EB. Still some valid info in my post.
As for the second part, you're Interpreting "weird" as rare/uncommon. It would be weird if he doesn't match up the rear axle bolt pattern wouldn't it?

go with RuffStuff...they are a site sponsor....and I have had great customer service/quick turn around on all my orders:icon_thumby:

Stick with Ruff Stuff for sure.

how are you guys mounting leafs to the waggy 44? are you running spring under? I was planning on running spring over

Oh as for good Canadian companies go with TMR customs and Big Country Customs.
