Coleman Liquid Fuel

That's not what I wanted to hear!

I guess that makes sense, people buying up stuff like that for their prepping or whatever.

Remember like a year ago when they were dirt cheap on clearance?

I think it was the clearing out kind of clearance not the rotating stock kind of clearance. Once those were gone none of the walmarts in my area got any back in. Same goes for pump assemblies.

Oddly enough they still stock the propane cylinders and propane lanterns :icon_confused:

I recently ordered some of these:

I also grabbed a globe for my brother's lantern. I like their globes, they are just plain glass with no "made in china" like a new Coleman... although they are made in China they just don't advertise it. Their mantles are supposed to be pretty good, almost like the old Silk-Lites.

I do remember that, I bought a bunch of them. I don't feel bad ruining mantles on questionable lanterns if they didn't cost much.

I think I have some Peerless mantles too. Seems like I bought some for that inverted lantern because I read it works better with a different size or something. They seemed to be pretty good quality.

eBay has a bunch of the tube mantles...maybe I'll order some.

😖

eBay it is.

Walmart doesn't even have green propane bottles, let alone mantles. Scheels has plenty of mantles but only the normal style and some weird upside down sock looking things. Not what I need.

I kinda feel like maybe I should go buy a few more gallons of white gas...sheesh

You might try cabelas too, for big box stores they have the best Coleman selection in Omaha.

Omaha scheels just had unpriced instaclip mantles yesterday, I didn't make it to cabelas.

Tore down my brother's 220H

Amusing how much effort they put into these things

Cleaned it, soaked the leather and reassembled with a globe from a different lantern.

I don't get why they like lanterns so much. Sure I've found mud dauber nests elsewhere... But it's like the Coleman factory was infested with them. Free extras with your 220*!

I found a decent 220* in a gold/yellow Coleman clamshell case. I really want the case... If my work travels take me that way I'm probably going to own it if it still to be had.

I would love one of those cases to upgrade from my suicide case.

Well I tried Cabela's. No go, they have a ton of mantles but none of the #95s that I need. However I did buy two leather pump repair kits and one spare generator for the 220/228/275. Figured it wouldn't hurt to have a few more spares. I also picked up a NOS generator for a 414 stove at a thrift store today...don't need it but you never know, I may someday. The mantles I ordered on eBay should be here by Saturday.

It's alive!

I may not keep this thing. Or not use it much. I got my six new mantles in the mail today, threw one on, let it run for 20 minutes or so, and the top of the mantle is already torn. They appear to be stupid fragile. I have a propane lantern in my camper that has had the same mantles on it for years and they haven't fallen apart, even after jiggling around a lot. It is pretty bright, my first thought is that it's yet another one of Coleman's "better ideas"............

Can you get anything but Coleman mantles for it?

Yep, actually, the ones I got are "American Mantle" brand. The Coleman ones were stupid expensive, these were too, but I got six for $15 instead of two or four like most of the eBay listings. I think I have used that brand of mantles before and they were fine - I read a bunch of reviews about these Northstar lanterns that seemed to indicate that the mantles are just fragile no matter what and it's apparently true.

So I started binge watching the TV show MASH tonight. Didn't realize the important role Coleman played in classific TV shows. First episode, there seemed to be a Coleman stove heating Hawkeye's still. Second episode, I spotted this in the supply tent. See the shelf behind their heads?

I looked it up, the 426 came out in 1950 so they would have been just old enough.

Wonder if they were actually in use?

I know the mil-spec lanterns would have been, they are mentioned among other things being used for backups in forward hospitals.

When you start watching there are a lot of Coleman lanterns in movies/shows. Sometimes dated horribly wrong but that is half the fun in watching for them.
