I've had issues with this Ranger losing power when trying to accelerate especially up hill. It also would have whitish smoke come from the engine block after running for a little bit, especially after higher RPMs. I ran a set of compression tests too, and cylinder 3 was always showing low. After looking around and reading, I thought I had a head gasket issue, so I decided to tear it down and replace the gasket. I got a kit from RockAuto and started to work two days ago.

Man, getting to the head gasket is hard enough! Plus some of the plastic covers just broke due to how brittle the plastic is. We had a similar issue when we replaced the injectors. I've been taking A LOT of pictures with my phone, using quart plastic bags for bolts, trying to keep track of everything....

First problem I found was that the valve cover gasket was broken right where I've seen the most wetness on the block (just off of cylinder 1). There are even parts of the gasket inside the area.

When I reached the head gasket, though, it seemed pretty solid and was hard to break the seal. However, as can be seen in the attached image, one of the valves on cylinder 3 shows either rust of burn. I've included pictures of both the discolored valve and the one that looks normal, as well as both one of the head and the block after removal.

As to behavior prior to this effort, when she was parked and running, we got her to a point where she idles fine. Slowly increasing RPM generally shows the same, although she can seem to misfire periodically. Her engine block gets "wet" while running. At idle, there is very little of that, add RPMs and get her fully warmed up and the block will show it as will the exaust manifold after a while, leading to a little bit of what appears to be that white smoke mentioned above. Even at that point, there isn't a lot of it, which makes the color a little hard to judge. Same with smell. The best I could figure was that the smell was a bit sweet like coolant. No discoloration in the oil or coolant.

The main issue always came when trying to accelerate up a hill. There, she would both lose power, and move to stalling. This is why I believed that the head gasket was partially compromised. Enough so that when the coolant moved to a higher pressure (which I am assuming is the case with higher RPM as the pump moves faster), it would be under enough pressure to move into one or more cylinders and cause the vehicle to run rough, lose power, and move to stall.

Even so, breaking the seal of the head gasket to pull it out may have led to the liquid we are seeing in the pictures. In order to get it clear, I also had to pull it forward. While not clear in the pictures, the pistons themselves all seem intact - although the visible cylinder walls (2 & 3) appear to show some rust inside, possibly as the vehicle has spend significant time sitting. It may be a tell of other damage though. Likewise, the gasket itself appears to have uniform thickness. I don't see anywhere that is worn down.

Based on this, I do believe this is a burnt valve? The damage is affecting the seal leading to low compression in the affected cylinder?

If this is the case, what course of action should I take? Should I replace all the valves and items such as seals, or is there more to look at before getting such items and trying to fix it - such as where the debris I found under the valve cover could have been?

Further, am I wrong in my assessment of the head gasket as having been intact, or it there evidence of water or even oil intrusion as I originally thought?

As a further note, this is a "project car" my neighbor and I have been learning on before we move to an '86 that I drove in high school. I would rather make mistakes here and learn from them before moving on to my old one - which I know will take a bit of work as her present body color appears to be "rust, with a bit of original red paint". Yet neither is in immediate need. I just want to get this one done a bit quicker as we might be able to use her as a backup if she can be made to move reliably again.

A "burnt valve" doesn't really look burnt from the side you are looking at. Where the rubber meets the road is underneath the valve where it seals. You need to take that suspect valve out, and inspect underneath at the surface where it seals, and also the surface on the head where the valve seals against. Look this area over very carefully, these engines are known for cracking heads. You might want to take it to a machine shop and let them look at it. They can pull the valves and check for cracks. They will clean it up, resurface the valves and check the head gasket surface to make sure it's not warped.

Don't be disappointed if you have to take the head to a machine shop. For the best results some things are best left to someone with the equipment and experience. You already did the grunt work in getting it off the truck.

I had my neighbor come over last night so we could both look at it more deeply. He looked over the valves and the seats and after looking suggested the same - take to a machine shop for further inspection.

He said that with the valve showing the issue, the seat looks like it may be corroded and rough, meaning that the seal there is possibly the cause.

I also had him look at the head bolts. He didn't really see much of an issue that some are covered in oil, while others show signs of rust. Same with the coolant passages. While his experience with this particular engine is limited, he told me that it wasn't uncommon for headbolts to connect to oil or coolant passages because of manufacturing concerns. Cheaper to build them that way and having them do such things doesn't cause problems as long as the bolts are properly torqued.

He agreed that the head gasket looks in decent shape, yet recommended if I go the shop to bring it with me for them to look over as well. Inspecting the head gasket may help them in determining where the problems are. Meanwhile, I should clean the top of the block carefully and throughly, noting anything that seems odd.

Along those lines, both of us found it odd that there was no exhaust manifold gasket. Meanwhile, the intake manifold gasket is definitely shot. Both manifolds have significant carbon build up, so I will probably be doing at least some cleaning there. Why in the intake does have me puzzled. I wouldn't expect that simply from the air. Maybe part of the recirc?

The surface rust inside the cylinders is also interesting. It brushes off, yet how it got there to begin with is a mystery. The engine was moving for the compression test, yet may have gotten water in it during cleaning after? when the plugs were out and I was cleaning the area around their ports? Oil has been coming down from the valve cover leaving a bit of a mess, and I was trying to clean with water to get the gunk out, yet moisture, not full on gallons....

So, the plan is to contact a shop either on Tuesday or Wednesday and take it in for at least inspection. Neither of us could see any signs of cracking or unevenness. The cams look in good shape too. The biggest concern is the debris from the valve cover and the possible damaged seat in at least that one area. He advised waiting to order any other parts (such as valves) until after the machine shop takes a look. And, I'll be cleaning, taking pics and such.

Yes you will get carbon build-up from the EGR system. "Exhaust Gas Recirculation". They put exhaust right back into the intake under the carb or right after the throttle body. You hear about all the problems it causes on the newer diesel engines when they introduced EGR in those.

The machine shop guy will know where to look for cracks. Your neighbor is correct, that valve and seat should be smooth for a good seal. If it's not very bad the machine shop guy can grind a new face on the valve and the seat. He will also check the valve guides. That is the hole were the valve rides up and down. If these get sloppy, the valves will not seal well. He will go through the whole thing. Hopefully you can find a good shop. These days a lot of them are closing.
 
Head cracks on these come in right between the valves, I don't see any of the normal tell tales on yours which would be clean spots at the narrowest point. I would take the nicest level you have (or get a good 2' aluminum level) and put it end to end on the head and use a feeler gauge around and see if it's under ~0.002" in the middle, if so it doesn't need to be surfaced.

A lot of times new valves are cheaper than having the old ones ground... I got a valve grinder for $50 so I do my own now (last time I used the grinder at work but now I have options) but new valves are like $4 sometimes so it's hard to argue with that math...

To really inspect the valves they need to be pulled, you absolutely cannot see how they work looking at them in the head.
