Cluster swap questions

I was looking for a Sport Trac cluster in a parts yard and while I didn't find one in a Trac, I found a 2001 Explorer (even had a 5 speed, nice!) with the same white face gauges so I picked it up. I was just wondering if this would be plug and play into a 2000 Ford Ranger 2.5L. I've searched over and over for a straight answer, but it hasn't found me yet.

So will this plug straight in and work (assuming nothing is wrong with the cluster itself) or do I need to switch pins in the cluster or harness to get all the gauges and tach working correctly? I'm assuming it will since it is basically the same cluster from the Sport Trac.

A nice way to know what'll work or not is this:

Are both trucks either 1997 and older or 1998 and newer?

Does the non Ranger cluster look the same as a Ranger with a tach cluster? (Black white or silver doesn't matter)

If you answer yes to all of these, the cluster will work.

Short answer, that cluster will work.

Clusters swap no problem. To get the tach to work correctly, you will have to re-pin some wires per following from tech library.
Here's how you modify your Ranger tachometer for V-8 use:

1) Get your dash apart and disconnect the cluster
2) If you have a EVTM turn to the Instrument cluster section
3) Locate Pin 8 on wire connector C216 (Black/Yellow Wire)
4) Use a very small flathead screwdriver to release the pin from the connector housing
5) Find Connector C214 (largest of the 3 for cluster)
6) Install the wire removed from C216 in to slot 16 on C214. This slot is currently vacant.
7) Put everything back together and fire it up. You're all done.

Don't let this post confuse you. You only have to do this if you swapped engines. Your factory harness is already pinned correctly for whatever engine it came with. Your tach will be plug and play no need to swap pins.
