I have a 96 Ranger XLT 2.3L. recently i went to an exhaust shop and had a glasspack put in inplace of the muffler. My cat is leaking. I read that getting rid of the cat will kill back pressure. Would it be wise to get rid of the cat?

it will not effect your "backpressure". but...

your truck is OBDII, which means it has a cat efficiency monitor. removing the cat will trip the CEL.

removing originally equipped emissions components is against FEDERAL law (this means it applies to ALL states), and is punishable by a hefty fine.

being that disabling emissions components is against the law, TRS does not condone discussion of such...so dont be surprised if a moderator locks this thread.

I kind of thought so.

Yes i understand. I live in Georgia. There are only 8 counties that have emissions, therefore im not worried about it. I dont live in Atlanta which is where they have emissions.

read again:

federal law overrules state law. meaning that regardless of state or local emissions laws, your in violation of the law by removing the cat converter anywhere in the US of A.

Not only against the law, but also against your LUNGS. Wicked & the other guys convinced me that cats are good for everybody ( and I was firmly against them at one time). I took my bad cat off while I was re-doing the exhaust system-- the truck ran great/had more power/sounded good,,,,but I lost 5 mpg & the exhaust smell was so strong, my eyes watered. Put a new cat on--better gas mileage/clean air/clean exhaust/sounds good...:icon_hornsup:

If the cat is leaking? Then have it repaired or replaced. That simple.

Main reason many people get confused with? The computer, it's software/hardware, everything is built around the existing emission control devices. Yeah, removing the cat "can" net lower back pressure--But also consider that a working cat creates a very small amount of back pressure in the first place!! While some may disagree (mainly on 'Ricer' sites). That small amount of back pressure? Does not have much, if any effect on how the car/truck drives. In fact in some cases, the O2 sensor and the computer are configured to expect that! So in essence, removing the converter and dropping in a test pipe? Can make your performance actually WORSE!

In fact, the only reason to EVER run a test pipe, in place of the converter? Is to test for a clogged converter. (one where you can do a visual and it looks fine, however the carbon buildup could be several inches into the honeycomb material used)

Just my .02cents..

feds aint looking for removed cats in the south they are looking for meth labs and such. friend of mine install brand new headers and some asshole took a sawzall to the end of them to steal the cat. fucked his header and cat back now he has to replace the entire system.
was thinking of drilling mine out but after reading about the efficiency o2 i dont care anymore.

BTW if you look hard enough you can find companies that make performance cats for certain apps. I found some for the ranger 4.0sohc all three cats. of course itll run close to grand for the set. magnaflow cats direct fit

dude

there all going to tell you no

truck runs better gains mpg if its not to new and sounds a little deeper

i life next door to ya man i know what you mean

cut it off and leave it

but this is a really bias form bord

so do what ever you want

i really do NOT beleave the amout of emmisions from a cat make a diffrence

then again i also have a old f100 that gets 9mpg with NO cats and a compleat dead miss

hell on wheels on earth

so its up to you

its nothing noticable eather way

but cutting it off will save you a about $100

sorry to inform you, but your simply wrong. cats improve tailpipe emissions. its not up for debate, its a simple fact.

The whole emissions thing takes place in the cat! the other stuff helps a little but a cat removes the most! agreeing not argueing with yah.:icon_thumby:

I am actually putting a cat back on my truck for that, I took it off when I put a new muffler on because it was completely plugged, I mean all of the way though and around plugged. and I was in High school and that it was RAD!!!! but I kinda turned into "sounds great!" rather than "YEAH BOYEEEE ITS SO LOUD..." "WHAT?". It will make me feel better about driving my truck when it is all fixed.

Plus, there are still many that don't understand "backpressure," but I'm tired of arguing the point..............:)shady

It's been proven that they reduce certain types of emissions. They do it by converting them into other gases. The thing that hasn't been proven is that the emissions they cut down on are actually harmful.
