carb help

so on the manifold it had the firing order of the cylinders and then it had a bunch of numbers starting with d9 so im thinkin its a 79. and the alternator has one wire going to a plug on it and then two other wires going to one other plug on it. and the choke has no wires connected to it. think i could get a couple pics of the choke and the alternator and you could help me out?

Hello

yea I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add a pic here If you have a test light or vom on mine there are three terminals on the alternator one goes to the bat always hot the red insulator is hot with key on and the white insulator is hot after you start the motor the white one is the one you power the choke with unless you just want to run a wire from the ignition or any other switched hot would work also If you email me I could show you a pic of mine I am only getting 8 volts from the alternator one so have it switched from the ignition. My email is kimcrwbr1@aol.com let me know either way ok Kim

well here's my choke. idk if you can see but towards the top is a little tab that im assuming is where i would hook the wire up.

now for the alternator as you can see one plug has two wires going to it and the other, one. and there all the same damn color..

I think I see your problem the pics are real dark but disconnect the negative off your battery first unplug both wires off of your alternator the wire with the red boot just unplugs right and the big one at the top of the pic is it bolted on I belive it is in the wrong place. where it is on the alternator look at the base of the connector is it white. the big wire that has that clump of tape strip it down to the wires and see where they are going trace them back to the connector if you can or test and find the one that is always hot. there is another terminal on the alternator where you unplugged the red connector that is where you connect the hot wire or the thick one it is the terminal the size of the wire connector or the largest bolt on the back it is raised up a little from the rest of the back of the alternator the large guage wire should not have anything else connected to it and should be black and orange once again it goes to the large connector on the alternator and is always hot so disconnect the battery first ok so now with just those two wires hooked up to the alternator you need to check for shorts or just touch lightly the neg battery terminaland you should not have any power draw at this time. man i wish I could figure out how to add pics tell me how and i can show you how it is plugged in. anyway if it is right and the alternator or regulator are good it should charge check out the tech library here toward the bottom is the charging section the pic is not that good but shows where the wires plug in to the alternator

Is it charging the battery the way it is maybe the alternator is different on a 79 but the schematics i look at have the same wiring for earlier there are three battery field and stator maybe you need to find someone that knows how to use a voltmeter but the stator connector on the alternator goes to the choke the pic is hard to see but i believe it is the spade connector

well the truck runs and charges fine the way it is. the reason im needing help with the choke assembly is because i just put this new carb on. so if i were to find the wire that only has power when the engine is on, could i run a wire from that tab on the choke to that wire and just tap it into the wire?

also the only way i've figured out how to put pics on here is you need to put them onto photobucket and then get the img code and paste it here.

oh ok. well i'll look tomorrow and see if my alternator has a place to connect it at. i'll keep you updated

Yea if you cant find it on the alternator you can run a wire from the power to the ignition coil to the choke or any switched hot under the hood I would run a wire from the choke to the pos on the battery and see if it works first just turn the choke thermostat till it closes the butterfly and hold the wire on the + side of the battery for a few minutes and see if it opens the butterfly. once you get it working then you need to adjust the pull off and high idle depending on the carb it has maybe you could get a cheap rebuild kit for the info or you could just wing it it might be close if you turn it where it was before you started

ok i've found that my alternator has three plugs in it. it has that white one like yours except theres already a connection on it that goes idk where. but do i just attatch the choke wire to that with the other connection too or not?

yea can you test it for power there should be no power with the ignition on and then get power after you start the motor maybe the wire coming from it is where it was hooked up it should go either to the regulator and or the choke see if you can trace that wire to where it goes
