so i have a pinto engine in my 83 ranger. i just switched from a holley 4412 carb to a holley 5200 or weber 32/36. i bought it off ebay apparently remanufactured. now when i go to start it, it starts up fine, revs up to about 3000rpm and then dies. i can keep on the gas and keep it running for about 5-10 seconds but then it dies. can anybody tell me what i can do?

What fuel pump are you running? It also could be a sticking or dirty float needle seat. It sounds like it's running out of fuel.

well i tried researching to figure out how to get to the float on this carb or if i could adjust the float. also im not sure.. im assuming i just have the stock fuel pump, the person i bought it from had the grand idea of swapping in the pinto engine so im not real sure on my engine info which is frustrating. my neighbor thinks it might be that i have too much fuel pressure which would be flooding it and killing it. seeing as i had a larger carb on before it sort of makes sense to me

does it idle by itself and was it rebuilt by a shop I am guessing it has a new filter. I would put a timing light on it also and see if you lose spark at the same time. not sure on how to adjust the float but sure it can be adjusted. look for part numbers on the motor can tell you the year
C4 = 1964
c=60s
d=70s
e=80s
example D9AZ-12A199 B first two tell you the year D9 = 79 just look for common numbers can help you get parts and identify your motor and look up the specs I always get a manual for any engine i buy good luck

no it wont idle on its own. i bought the carb off ebay from a company called AAAA apparently it was rebuilt/remanufactured. thanks for the info on the engine i'll look into that

The tech library hase alot of info on the 2.3l under 4 cyl engines is the fuel line hooked up to the pump on the side of the engine are the plugs wet with fuel when it happens probably a needle valve stuck open if dry fuel pump or clogged fuel line or filter. do you have a timing light to see if you have spark when it happens

Sounds like what mine was doing...had a friend take it apart and clean it and it worked great after that...

Does it idle if you close the butterfly manually and hold it closed? If so, then it's either something stuck or something dirty...

well i dont have the electric choke hooked up yet so the choke plate is closed when trying to run it. is this the problem? or would it still run just not very well?

yea loosen the choke thermostat screws and turn it clockwise till the choke butterfly is open and try and run it you might need to hold the throttle open to get some air in there to burn the fuel as in flooded and let up after it starts there should be a wire there somewhere to hook up to the thermostat and get it working right does it have an electrical connector on it mine hooks up to the alternator on the connector that only gets power after the engine is running not sure on the 2.3l tho

i got it! it was a vacuum leak where the carb spacer meets the manifold. it didnt cover it all the way but nothing a little superglue didnt fix right up.

glad you got it running hope the glue holds you might consider finding a spacer or fabbing one up as a permanent fix chances are the glue will fail when you really dont want it to out in the stix somewhere keep another bandaid handy keep it in the box with the bailing wire:D

yeah keep the superglue and duct tape around haha. definately dont want another hunting trip.. my wheel bearing exploded and my entire wheel fell off with the rotor attached in the mountains. luckily someone had a satellite phone. but thanks for all your guys help

Did you find the year of the motor and get the choke working it makes it nice on cold starts

i havent yet. ill check it out when it clears up around here. also how exactly do i hook up the choke? is there just a power wire from it or a ground too? and where should i hook up the power wire?

on the alternator I believe its the stator or s terminal its the one that don`t have power when the ignition is on but but will give you voltage after you start the motor. Does your choke thermostat have one or two wires for one it should already be grounded for two you need to provide ground and hot I believe all fords have only one. If you have an ohm meter go from battery ground or any good ground to the terminal if theres a ciucuit it should work then connect the wire from the alternatorto it and see if the choke opens when the engine is running you can run a jumper wire from the pos on the battery to it to test it also you can also use the ignition hot for the coil to power it also (ignition switch) just make sure it is switched. also does your alternator have a connector with three wires or three separate terminals will give you a ballpark on the year. the tech section here has alot of good info on charging system checks and a couple good schematics.
