Cant get drums off

I like the bevel idea. Will try this on the new drums.

I would not cut any meat off the new drums. His idea was for used drums. And in reality, if the ridge is that bad, the drums are probably worn too bad to re-use anyway. They would have to be mic'ed to check them. I have had drums turned too far and it makes the pedal spongy because of the drum flexing.

Drums cost like 25 bucks each. Turning them costs about $15-20 each. Is it really worth saving 10 dollars to reuse old drums anyway? :dunno:

Just one more reason I upgraded my 2002 Ranger with Mustang rear disk brake option.

1st, disconnect the E brake cable upstream. Saturate with penitraiting fluid. Can you spin the drums?

Now try losening with a 5lb hammer to move the drums, if no, add fluid

Then 2, remove the brake lines and unbolt the cylinders.

Now try losening with a 5lb hammer to move the drums, if no, add fluid

3 ideas;
A) saturate everything inside with penitraiting fluid+5lb
B) heat the center of the drum (just one spot) until you can't heat it any more, then 5lb. Repeat fluid.
C) canned air to the wheel bolts (freezes them), then hammer to drum. Repeat fluid

All you need is a little movement and that drum can be pounded off. If it's already moving a little, then it will need to be pounded off, 1mm at a time

I went through this exact same process this last fall. In the end I was trying to heat the entire drum, when I stopped doing that and only heated one little quarter dollar sized spot, then the 5lb, that is when it finally moved, a very tiny bit.

After that, I heated each spot of the 5 spots, between the lug nut bolts, then it was loose enough to pound off. It still fought me but it came of a thread at a time.

I managed to get the drums off. I put 2 ratchet straps at 9 and 3 o-clock pulling out from the drum, tensioned them and pounded around with a hammer. After a few blows I'd re-tension the straps - it really helped having the pulling pressure while pounding.

Sadly I wasn't able to get the adjusters free - my dumbass was cheap and didn't fork out the $$ for two new ones...They are soaking in deep creep tonight.

I seen the conversion in the tech articles. I'm in a mountainous area so if these drums get toasted ill look into the rear disk swap.
