Gonna put full size axles under my 98 extended cab 4.0 5 speed was wondering what gears would be needed to run the 40's that come with the rear axle I am going to buy any help would be greatly appreciated

You better be getting 1 ton axles if you want to spin 40's. I'm running 5.38's with my 40's on my 91 4.0l auto

The rear I'm looking at is a 14 bolt 3/4 ton it currently is running the 40's but it is on a dodge with a 318 would it not last me?

The 14 bolt will handle it but what front axle are you planning on using?

Haven't got that decided yet u have any suggestions?

If u going to do any heavy wheeling go with a Dana 60 front. Street queen and a light foot a Dana 44 could survive. Iv seen plenty of Dana 44s take a lot of abuse, but alot of money could be saved if u just go with a 60 right away.

That's kinda what I was planning on was a 60 what would be a good vehicle to get a 60 out of?

Not trying to be a dick or anything (ok, I am) but if you have to ask if you CAN run 40's and dont even know which axle to run for the front (look at the D60 bible in the tech library) you should stick to 235/75/R15's.

What are your plans for this thing? What steering box are you going to graft onto your frame, What suspension setup are you going to use? <-- These are also the kind of questions you MUST have answers to if you're going to run "40's".

Thanks a lot for your sincerity and if I wanted you to answer what I'm planning on for suspension or how I plan to steer it I would have asked the start to this build is a long ways off just starting to gather info I guess you were born knowing everything though so its cool

There are 100's of fourms with 1000's of threads explaing just about everything imaginable in the 4X4 world.

So because I'm not as knowledgeable as you I can't use the forum to ask questions and learn?

Well ya.....

After you at least TRY TO SEARCH.
Hell i lurked on here for a while before i even became a member, and then it was at least another month of just researching before i asked a question.

I was a mamber of pirate for over three years before i ever even posted on there.
There is UNLIMITED amount of general info on pirate, SEARCH MAN!!!!
I drilled and tapped a steering box for hyd assist just from searching, rebuild a fargin C-6 transmission just from researching it.

Dont get butthurt, im not talking down to you, just telling you to stop digging a hole, and use Yahoo/Google for what its for.
TRS's search works great!!!!
Pirate's,,,,, not so much. So google search your question with "pirate4x4" with it.
Its that easy.

OK well I have searched I should have probably worded my post differently just was curious as to why not very many guys I see on here run bigger than 35" tires yes obviously i knew that u could run 40" tires and bigger was just looking for some more info on the subject

Look for a 78-79 F350 4x4, and 1986- i believe 1992 were all kingpin Dana 60s
and 92 to 97 were balljoints. Anything from a superduty were metric.
Kingpins are better , but balljoints are not to far behind.
