Can I install gears without the tools?

Ok, well I'm off of work tomorrow so I think I'll give it a shot then.........if I can find a shim kit somewhere around me. I'll post up pics of the progress as I go along.

I'm pretty sure I can do it as long as you guys help...."hint hint".....haha.

So let me get this clear then, dial indicator and an inch torque wrench right. Oh yeah, also a shim kit from an axle company. I'll also do some reading online here in a few hours to make sure I fully understand.

Please be around tomorrow guys, I'm tackling it!

Can you guys please show me what the "dial indicator" looks like. Thanks.

Ok, geez Mike I really appreciate all the help. I really wish you were'nt so far away.

Every shop I've been calling around here wants at least $400-$450, even if I have everything. I don't think I'll be able to do them tomorrow because I can't find anyone who has an install kit available around me. I do need one right? And the shims in the differential now are not reusable?

Is this install kit going to be ok? It's the MK F7.5 kit for $19.92

It comes with shims, marking compound, pinion seal, and crush sleeve.

The shims are reuseable. I have a big bag of various old and new shims, so usually when I set up gears all I need to buy is a crush sleeve.

But if you only have a few shims on hand, you'll need the kit, as chances are you will need a thickness you don't have. And yes, that install kit should be just fine.

Thanks Evan, believe it or not I was at the swap meet this last Saturday and picked up a t-shirt with the old style Bronco (fullsize) rigs on it for my neighbor. He's a 23 year old kid but works on his Bronco all the time.

He was driving by a few hours a go and I happened to see him so I stopped him and gave him the t-shirt. He was thrilled! He happens to know how to set up gears too! He just helped me a coiuple of hours ago to remove my old (4.56) gear set and explained to me how to set up the new ones!

He showed me a trick on how to reuse (I know some of you may not agree here) the old crush sleeve. I'm going to install the gears the way they came out of my old diff and then check the pattern with "pressin blue"?>

I'm still going to buy the dial indicator however to check backlash. I need to read up online here now.

yeah i dont get why people will spend money on all kinds of dumb shit, but insist on reusing something that is a one time use piece to save 3 dollars

Where can I buy one at? They don't just sell them at my local auto parts store do they? AutoZone, Kragen, Napa, CarQuest, etc?

Help! section.

You could only reuse one if you were lucky. You can't "uncrush" a crush sleeve, so if it has been crushed too far, there is no way to reuse it.

I strongly recommend buying a new one.

I found it in the Help! section. $5 for two. I don't know why they sell them in two-packs.

But this means I have an extra. PM me your address and I'll mail it to you, if you still need it.

Apparently, those sleeves are nearly universal, and are the same for 7.5s, 8.8s and even GM semifloating axles.
