Can I get some advice on subs

Oh lol, will one of those 50 dollar boxes be good enough, because hell, i'd definitely take the short cut if you think they would be, i dont have much time and as long as the box delivers.

Thanks for all your help and I'll make sure i get some pics up evetually, after I wreck havoc on my truck. :D

ask for the material made with
how it's put together (screws/nails/glue/sealed seams/etc)
thickness of material (i'd get at least 3/4" mdf)

and as long as it meets those above requirements, and the correct air space requirements, and fits in your truck, then you're all set. there's nothing wrong with buying a pre-made box if it fits your needs... in fact i wish i could have easily found one for mine... i didn't look extremely hard, but i ended up sort of making my own, it's still not finished, and this project "started" almost a year ago lol... i hate how long it's taken... ugghh:annoyed:

as long as its built right. dont go to wallmart to look for one. got to a real stand alone audio store. or even on line.

also so if there a good shop. that can make boxes. some times they will make a custom one for 50 bucks as long as its just the same power wedge shape just shorter or longer.

after you have been doing it a while (you ) i can start wipping them out in like 20 min and another 10-15 to carpet. its like riding a bike.

so making one two inches longer, so its just what you need is just as easy as makeing one two inches shorter.

partsexpress sells carpeted boxes cheaper than I can make them, that being said I made mine but I recommend owning a router with a plate for cutting holes. If you own a good router they sell the plate for 20$ and it cuts to the nearest 1/16th of an inch. Comes out perfect every time which you can't saw the same for a jigsaw

I've rethinked my subwoofer choice because I've been fooling with measurements and dimensions. I've decided it's got to be a slim 12 inch or a relatively thin 10 inch sub...

What's your best advice for this area subwoofers? I'm leaning toward that Polk MM 12 inch, it barely squeaks by my measurements.

Hearing what you all have said about slim subwoofers I don't think i should worry about their output being any less than a normal 12 inch, right?

Sorry to drag this thread on and on, i just gotta make sure everything matches up with what I want. :icon_hornsup:

well you can get true slim driver at like 2-3 inches. or you can get a flat faced slim driver. and like 4-5 inchs
how much room do you have to work with

I would like to keep it(the box itself) around 18 inches wide, about 14 inches tall and I would like it to be sort of a truck encloser where the box angles back so that I can still recline my seat if say I want to take a nap :D

If I use an angled box it means the slim subwoofer is the way to go, I have about 5 to 6 inches of depth for the sub, but that would be cutting it close, I want to be under the 5 inch mark in the sub's depth.

great middle price range subwoofer from the reviews i have seen and videos i have seen online.

can even get the 10's and it should be a slimmer mount.

Alright I have it boiled down to these choices, thanks to you guys' help the kicker is in my final running...

Kicker CVT124 (10CVT124)
RMS: 400 watts
Impedance: Single 4 Ohm
Frequency response: 25-350 Hz
Mounting depth: 4-3/8"

~$100

Polk Audio MM1240
RMS: 425 watts
Impedance: Single 4 Ohm
Frequency response: 22-200 Hz
Mounting depth: 4-5/8"

~$130

Pioneer TS-SW3001S4
RMS: 400 watts
Impedance: Single 4 Ohm
Frequency response: 20-230 Hz
Mounting depth: 3-1/4"

~$120

Kenwood eXcelon KFC-XW1200F
RMS: 350 watts
Impedance: Single 4 ohm
Frequency response: 20-230 Hz
Mounting depth: 3-15/16"

~$100

I also want to ask, some subwoofers such as the Kenwood have a really high peak power handling (1400w) as compared to say the kicker with 800w, does this number mean anything, or is it just "paper specs."

If you want to throw one in that i might like feel free, but these are what i am liking the most at the moment and I'm willing to lay the money down on the best one.

depends on the amp you want to buy too. that almost has more decision making than the sub itself.

should be able to get 400-500w out of any of those subs with a quality mono

Already got the amp, an alpine 5 channel pdx-5, the mono channel is rated at 300W RMS, but the amp actually came with this little "Actual Ratings" birth certificate type card that said it tested at 424W RMS, don't know if thats bs or not....

but those are the subs that i think would match up well to the amp and to my space.

ArcAudio ARC10d4?

Not that I recommend doing it, but i am running that sub with about 600W RMS, no problems yet.

its not the wattage, its the distortion that kills subs.

i recommend going over the rms of the sub, that way if you wanna crank it, you wont be sending a clipped signal to the sub.
