2.5L ('98-'01) Can anything about this engine's condition be seen here?

This is a 2001 2.5 engine with 253000 miles. I am interested in looking to buy this vehicle in a disassembled condition, as can be seen. The reason why the engine was disassembled is unknown to the seller as is the engine's general condition.

Looks like squeaky clean piston tops. Can hardly imagine that. Can't tell if there are any cross hatchings left.

Someone apparently began this project and then stopped for some unknown reason. I don't yet know the history on this vehicle. The parts are all inside the bed. Cylinder head has the manifold still attached. Possibly needs a trip to the machine shop?

Do you suppose this was a head gasket job? Maybe they saw more damage and stopped? Maybe they lost their place to work on it, and it got towed? Looks ready for reassembly. The rest of the truck is sharp looking in Philadelphia on FB. Wheels are clean, and no rust on the truck. Strange for the rust belt.

Maybe best to go with a replacement 2.5? TIA

@rdsrds123 I personally can't see nothing that jumps out at me for why the was not finished.

Can I asked have started communicating with the current owner?
If so has he told you why the project was abandoned?
If he's not the person that started the project what does he know about the truck?
Have you asked how he came to be the owner of the truck in its current state?

Can't answer any of these questions. I am trying to decide if it is worth going after. New engine or finish this job?

A close look at a couple cylinders show vertical lines. The block is so clean.

I seen line in the 3rd cylinder from the front.
However the picture quality is not good enough for me to really tell if it's just bleed a grease or what I can't tell if it's actually grooves.

So at this point I can't give you no advice sorry to waste your time.
Good luck on whatever you choose to do.

Okay I've thought of a suggestion.

If you like what you see in the post and think you will enjoy the truck once it's fixed buy it.
With the mindset that you will have to change the motor.
At the same time look for another truck that is the same year that has been wrecked but yet is still drivable.
But wreck to the point where the frame is bent or something of that nature.
So that way you can test drive the truck and yet you can get the motor and transmission and whatever else you need from that truck.

However hold off on buying the second truck until you received the first vehicle and see if you can just put it back together or not.

Best of luck to you. I wish you well.
And hope that once you get the truck running and driving you can have some fun with it.

If you click on the blue Facebook link the picture is more clear and you can see the entire ad, but thank you. I see those lines too. Cylinder 4 has a horizontal line I think

I'm on parole for a computer related ofence and am not allowed on Facebook so I can't click your link sorry.

Okay @rdsrds123 I hope you've read my post #7 of your thread here.

I've activated the magnifier setting on my phone.
I seen the line on the very back piston sleeve you're talking about. After I use the magnifier to blow it up some making the picture bigger.
From what I can tell ( from that poor quality picture ) that definitely looks like a groove.

2001 and not running. It's effectively a roller shell IMO. I know prices vary regionally, but that is close to running and driving truck money here.

I agree considering the condition. Looks to be zero chassis rust, good tires, etc. Only the engine issue is known, but what about transmission and ac? Could also be bad at 250k. Would have to get it cheaper, but can this engine be repaired? The engine image does show questionable marks on some cylinders. 150 miles away, so I need to know more first. Opening the FB link is much clearer. Thanks!
