I have a 99 Ranger 3.0l engine and want to put in a 97, using a 97 Engine Computer.

I was checking for differences and find that the Camshaft Synchronizer/Position sensor for these 2 years may be different.

Can any one tell me what the differences are and whether the 99 unit will work with the 97 Engine Computer..??:icon_confused:

Welcome to TRS :)

Earlier Cam sensors use 3 wire Hall Effect sensors
Later used 2 wire Variable Reluctance(VR) sensors
Late 1990's is when they changed on Ranger V6 engines
These are different pulses/signals so there is no "wiring" adapter

Computer you are using will need correct sensor for its year

3.0l engine syncronizers(lower part of Cam sensors) are the same, so '99 syncro will fit in '97 engine and visa versa

If you are using a 1997 computer then you will need the 3 wire Cam sensor/synchro unit regardless of engine year

V6 Crank sensors were VR sensors from day one, so same on all years

You will run into an issue with the fuel system
1998 and up Rangers used Returnless system(one fuel line) with 60psi fuel pressure
1997 and older used Return system(two fuel lines) with 30psi fuel pressure

1997 computer will be setup for 30psi system
And '97 engine will have hook up for the fuel return line on Fuel Pressure Regulator.
So you will need to setup/add a return fuel line to the gas tank
You may be able to custom fit return line to the Filler tube, return line has no pressure, just dumped extra fuel back in the tank

Thanks for the reply RonD...

I have the 99 ECU and engine harness, BUT, don't want to mess with the PATS (have no key and don't want to go thru the expense of getting one made, etc) , so I was hoping to use an not PATS ECU...:icon_twisted:

I don't have the engine wiring harness for the 97.. :dunno:

Does anyone know how to wire around the PATS? :icon_confused::icon_confused:
