Hey y'all, been a while. Ive been driving my 4.0 B2 swap more after putting a few thousand miles on it, and been loving it. But recently ive had some issues with it bucking and stumbling at WOT, and an odd idle. I initially went and checked the intake bolts and found a few were loose ish, so i just got done replacing the upper and lower gaskets(and torqued to spec). Idles great now, and at 3/4 throttle it will still pull. I checked plug wires, coil pack, vaccum lines; everything looks fine. Went and scanned for codes and found the 172 code, which is hego sensor fault lean. The O2 sesor is only a few thousand miles old, but i did find that it was touching the exhaust. Going to clean up the MAF, reroute the O2 wires and clear the codes to see if that does anything for me. I tried finding forums similar to my condition but most of them arent solved. Thanks in advance.
 
172 isn't bad sensor it is lean bank, and "lean bank" (suspect) combined with bucking and idle issues tends to tell us the lean bank is real not false.
Just for giggles I took the same ChatGPT session I built with a lot of commands to tell it not to fabricate, to research, to show sources and prove what it is saying and here is what the mystical AI had to say:

A Code 172 on a 1992 EEC-IV Ford is:


HEGO (O₂ sensor) indicates system lean (Bank 1)

By itself, 172 does not mean the O₂ sensor is bad. It means the ECU has driven fuel trim rich and the oxygen sensor is still reporting lean.

Now combine that with:

  • Loping idle ✔️
  • Bucking at WOT ✔️
  • Only Code 172 ✔️

That points much more strongly toward an actual lean condition than an ignition problem.

My probability ranking


1. Fuel pressure / weak fuel pump ★★★★★


This is my #1 suspect.

Reason:

  • At idle, a weak pump can almost keep up, causing a lean, unstable idle.
  • At WOT, fuel demand skyrockets.
  • Pressure drops.
  • Engine bucks and surges.

This is almost textbook.

The 4.0 OHV wants roughly 35–40 psi (vacuum connected) and around 40 psi with the regulator vacuum removed, depending on the exact calibration. More importantly, it needs to hold that pressure under load. A gauge taped to the windshield for a road test was a common diagnostic trick back when these trucks were new.



2. Vacuum leak ★★★★★


A significant vacuum leak can absolutely produce:

  • loping idle
  • lean code
  • hesitation

However...

Vacuum leaks usually become less important at WOT because manifold vacuum is very low.

So they explain the idle better than the WOT bucking.

I'd still smoke-test the intake.


3. Dirty or leaking MAF ★★★★☆


1992 was one of the first Ranger years with the MAF-equipped 4.0.

If the MAF underreports airflow:

ECU thinks:


Reality:


Result:

  • lean mixture
  • Code 172
  • especially bad under heavy load

Very common on early Ford MAF vehicles.


4. Fuel filter ★★★★


If it hasn't been changed in years:

  • idle mostly OK
  • WOT starves
  • bucking

Classic symptom.


5. Fuel Pressure Regulator ★★★☆


If the diaphragm leaks or regulation is incorrect:

  • low pressure
  • lean
  • rough idle

Also pull the vacuum hose.

If there's any gasoline in the vacuum hose, the regulator is bad.


6. Intake manifold gasket ★★★☆


The early OHV engines are old enough now that hardened intake gaskets are common.

Produces:

  • lean idle
  • lope
  • Code 172

Less likely to explain severe WOT bucking.


7. Injector problem ★★☆☆☆


One or more partially clogged injectors.

Possible.

Not my first guess.


8. O₂ sensor ★☆☆☆☆


Ironically...

This is actually pretty low on my list.

A lazy O₂ sensor doesn't usually produce:

  • severe WOT bucking

Also...

At WOT the ECU generally ignores the O₂ sensor and goes open-loop.

That's a really important clue.

If the truck bucks at WOT...

...the oxygen sensor isn't controlling fueling anymore.

That pushes me toward fuel delivery instead.


One thing I really like about your symptom combination


The idle and WOT failure have the same direction.

Idle:


WOT:

even leaner

That usually means one root cause.


Things I'd check in order


1. Fuel pressure gauge


Highest value test by far.

Observe:

  • KOEO prime
  • idle
  • snap throttle
  • driving uphill
  • WOT

Pressure should remain stable. If it falls during the bucking event, you've likely found the culprit.


2. Smoke test


Especially around:

  • upper intake
  • lower intake
  • PCV elbows (a notorious Ford failure point)
  • brake booster hose
  • vacuum tree
  • EVAP hoses

3. Clean the MAF


Only use proper MAF cleaner.

Don't touch the sensing wires.


4. Fuel filter


If its age is unknown, replace it.

It's inexpensive and can masquerade as more complex issues.


5. Check regulator vacuum hose


Any fuel present:

Replace regulator.


One thing that would change my ranking


I'd want to know:

Does the truck pull cleanly to about 2500–3000 RPM and then start bucking, or does it begin bucking almost immediately when you floor it?

If it waits until airflow and fuel demand are high, my confidence in a fuel delivery problem (pump, filter, pressure regulator) goes up even further.

Given only the symptoms and Code 172, I'd reach for a fuel pressure gauge before replacing any parts. A five-minute pressure test can quickly distinguish between fuel delivery and many other possibilities.



I agree with the order of steps just not the percentages. I think bucking at WOT is going to be closer to 90% fuel, so I'd go over the fuel system 3x before moving on to other systems. The other 10% in my mind is user error in the gasket install - extra air getting in causing it to go lean, so would go over the gasket again to make sure no booboo's
 
Since you just replaced the gaskets and HAD a definite leak (loose bolts) the 172 could just be historical - they don't clear out on their own instantly, I'd clear it drive it around a bit and see if a new/same code shows up.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did put in a new fuel pump, filter and tank about 2k miles ago, but i will definitely throw a pressure guage on there. I cleared codes multiple times and still get the 172 back. The truck will pull cleanly if not at WOT; but as soon as i floor it, it immediatly cuts out and bucks at speed. Even under no load if i put it to the floor its sputters. I just tried to take it up my hill and i had to keep tapping the throttle and dumping the clutch to get it up the driveway. It would bog down and want to cut out, but would stay alive at idle.

There is no fuel in the vacuum hose at the regulator. All my hoses are secured and clamped, though a smoke test wouldnt hurt. I did unplug the MAF and the truck would barely idle and rev, so the MAF is doing something.

I followed the intake gasket procedure to the T and used gasket sealer to seal the china walls(No leaks either). I made sure to use a quality metal and rubber gasket (Victor Reinz).

Double checking the o2 sensor wiring i discovered that some of the wiring was incorrect. I had 1 heater wire correct but the other was connected to black. Wired it up correctly and cleared the codes but that didnt seem to help anything. Its been like that for a while though so im not sure if it killed the o2 sensor, or was doing anything.

From what i can find in the forums i think its down to fuel or spark, but im not discounting anything yet.

I did clear the codes a few times, but it keeps coming back. Took it for multiple test drives and it seems to do the same thing each time. Before i replaced the gaskets i retightened the bolts and it ran pretty well, until it didnt. Thats why i originally thought it was the problem.
 
like chatgpt said lean is too much air in relation to fuel, and before it throws the code it dumps as much fuel as possible to make it more and more rich and correct the lean condition. so I expect your fuel economy is terrible.

we either have a lack of fuel getting in... clogged injector, low pressure, etc - fuel system issue or
we have an excess of air getting in... leak in the manifold gasket, etc (this is unmetered air, any air after the MAF sensor).

extra air is basically a non-issue at WOT cause at WOT manifold pressure is very low, so we are back to insufficient fuel delivery as the main culprit.

Well i thought i had no leaks for the lower manifold gasket. Turns out i have oil getting past the permatex gasket on the china wall. Guess im tearing it down again.... Not sure if this would be sufficient to cause the 172 code. I thought i put a thick enough bead down, i guess not.
