been having rear end problems finally tore it apart

sounded like fragged spiders from the git... and probably wobbed shafts too....

but they should pop if they are only cracked....because they are obviously not in the condition they usually end up in my rig...through the diff cover and the bottom of the pig

unless somebody swapped a 20 in there:D

axle shafts are the next road for me to go down! hopefully i can find some good somewhat cheap used ones for my explorer! (94 xlt 8.8 rear if anyone forgot lol) so if you see any there post her away or if u have any yourself send me a PM!

well if anything is wrong with the ring and pinion it would stand out, such as a missing or busted tooth, or chipped teeth. But that would not cause the problem your describing. I'm leaning away from the trans, if it were messed up then your driveshaft would not be spinning like that with the wheels on the ground. Have you by chance tried it with the diff cover off to see whats happening inside when the driveshafts spinning?

our junkyards in the detroit area usually fo 20-40 bux a set used.

are the front axleshafts turning too?

yea there is no teeth missing or even chips in the ring and pinion.... the only thing that im thinking may be and issue there is the splines on the pinion and pinion yoke? but once again never seeing a new one idk how deep they are and what not.... but by hand there isnt even a wobble or lose feeling to the pinion and pinion yoke? (and thats holding the pinion solid in one hand and trying to turn the yoke) now with my side gears and axle shafts thats a diff story...both side gears fit nice on the pass side axle shaft and i cant even wobble the side gears (once again same with these shaft held tight trying to turn side gears) but both side gears when put on the drivers side axle shaft there is a very small wiggle to it when trying to spin it? and no axle is dropped from the whole vehicle so its a bit late to try it with the diff cover off and see what happens...wish i woulda thought of that a long time ago tho!

ok installed my new spider gears and clutch plates today.... i set it up with the clutch plate, drive plate, clutch, drive, clutch, drive, clutch, like i was told i should do for a stronger LS... but it seems to be a very tight fit..i did get the psring back in fine...and once the axle shafts are in and c-clipped and the pinion lock shaft is re installed...there is like no play between teh ends of my axle shafts and the lock shaft? should it be like that..also i cannot get one tire to spin independently (like if the pinion yoke is locked and i try to spin one tire usually if i recall, it will spin the spider gears and rotate both tires via the spider gears (without turning the carier itself) but i cant get that...if the pinion is free to spin it along with both tires will spin in the same direction...so does this mean its toot ight and what should i do if so? or will it lossen up once i put rear end oil back in it and what not?

I say it's fine, if you installed extra clutches it's going to be tighter than originally Being that it a fresh rebuild I doubt your going to be able to get one wheel to spin. Get it together and on pavement then slowly turn as sharp as you can each direction, then you should see the wheels turning at different speeds. They should not lock up when doing this, if so then you have a problem(btw on gravel or dirt it will most likely try to lock up due to the loose surface). Remember your L/S additive and your set

What throttlejockey said.

Ford actually specifies a small amount of clearance in the stack (of friction and clutch plates). There are shims used within the assembly to adjust for the variation in thickness found in the friction and clutch plates and the machining of the differential itself. There is actually a gauge that can be used to determine the proper amount of clearance.

What you are experiencing, so far, is normal.

No, you shouldn't necessarily worry about not having clearance in the stack, at least not yet. Many of the people out there that find this out usually take out the shims and try to stuff an extra friction and/or clutch plate in there for "more friction" ..... unfortunately they don't understand what's going on in there and it's a worthless thing to do.
