Both heads have developed cracks. (86 2.9L)
Would it be worth while to consider rebuilding or spring for new heads?

I dealt with the same thing on my '90, your going to need to find either some new or used (rebuilt or have them rebuilt) heads. If you do find some used ones make sure they're not cracked as well since its a common problem on these 2.9s.

If you go used look for the later half of 89+ heads. The 86 to early 89's had an older design that was revised to prevent the cracking.

Did you run it much after you found the crack? If not, I'd say go for the heads.

When I replaced both heads on my 88 BII I got replacement heads from
Cylinder Heads International.

I expected rebuilt heads but the ones they sent were new 89TM castings with all new hardware; valves, springs, guides, stem seals, etc.

$175 each and free shipping of the core returns.
