I literally just had to replace both heads on my 4.0 about 3 month ago, wish I had documented it as well as you did, Bob mine is red monstaliner, I would have preferred a different color but did not want to mess with the jambs ect.

1 Question for the peanut gallery: How do I know if I have an LSD? Its supposed to have the towing package, so it might?

Jack up the rear axle and support on axle stands. Turn one wheel forward. The opposite wheel will turn in the same direction if it has lsd. It will turn in the opposite direction if its an open diff.

At the bottom of label under AXLE will be 2 digits, if its a Letter and a Number its LSD, if two numbers its OPEN


Towing package probably has 4.10 ratio but may or may not have LSD
4x4s often got LSD on the rear, but not always
Axle code will tell the tale

Reverse heater hoses at the firewall, it will keep heater core clean longer(reverse flow), do it every 2 years when you change coolant
This applies to pretty much any vehicle

Reverse flow... So, supply on top and return on the bottom? I ask since I don't have a truck right in front of me to look at.

Alright boys. I need some help.

Got the truck fired up last night. Top end it clanking around. Louder than I think it should be. Has good oil pressure. Is this normal? I know some engines are loud until the lifters pump up.

Any advice?

Did you crank it without starting it for a bit? I usually disconnect the coil/fuel pump (by various means depending on the vehicle) and crank it over 5-6 times for 10 seconds each to get the oil moving.

I did, but not 5-6 times. Saw oil pressure, thought that would be good.

Do the oil pressure "gauges" in these truck move? or are they just "on"

Afaik the gauge is an "on/off" switch. On at about 5-10psi.

Well boys, i was worried about nothing! turns out my sweet blue spark plug wires weren't getting good connections. threw the stockers back in and it's running supper minty:

I am very relieved. Oil change tonight/tomorrow, then I'll take her out for a rip.

This is an awesome photo job and the timing for me couldn't be better. I'm about to replace the heads on my 94 4.0L. I was thinking I would have to pull the engine but after seeing your project, maybe not. Thanks for all the images. I already have questions if you have the time?
For instance where did you purchase your heads and the headers?
I've been looking at AutoZone cuz I don't know any better. Thanks in advance.
