are aftermarket torsion keys good

i got a 2003 ford ranger fx4 and want to bring the front end up to fit bigger tires are after market torsion keys a good idea or will they screw up my front end or give me a rough ride or will the stock torsion keys be fine to crank

let me know what you know. and if you got pictures let me see um. if youve done this let me know how you like it.

There have been a few threads on the subject. How big of tires do you want? I have a 2003 FX4. I cranked the front about an inch or so and am running 265/75/R16 BFG ATs. There should be more than enough adjustment left in the stock keys.

um i would like 33s but i keep readin about how they wear some of your front end parts and all kinds of stuff

but the after market keys are pointless i can just crank the stock ones

You're not going to fit 33s (285/75/R16s) on the stock 16" rims without rubbing them. With a 1/5"-2" torsion bar crank max tire size will be 32" (265/75/R16) without rubbing. 33s typically require a body lift.

Don't bother with aftermarket keys, they are junk.

Gee, I wish I would have known that! I have an '04 with 285 BFG's that have been on since the truck was new and they havent rubbed yet! I better get them off before they do!

My 05 sport track has a 1.5" t bar crank and 265/75r16's on stock wheels and the clear no problem, I could fit 285's no problem either.

incorrect again.....ive seen 33's shoved under stock height fx4's with some rubbing, a 2" torsion crank will not rub at all.....

It depends on the brand of tire, they differ in sizes.......

not really, whether its been a 33" tsl' a 33" bogger a 33" mtr 33" bfg M/t and even 35" hawgs under one or two(which measure about 34)


all have fit with rubbing at stock height, and without rubbing once lifted 2"

I'm going to call BS again on you because there's NO way you're going fit a TRUE 33" tire under a 98+ 4x4 Ranger without rubbing, even with a torsion bar crank. It's well documented throughout TRS that a body lift is necessary.

If you can, then it's not a REAL 33" tire. I usually go by BFGoodrich's tire sizes, they seem to be the most accurate.

Now, if Ford changed the offset on the stock 16" wheels in later years, then it may be possible. But I doubt they did.

well, mis information can be a bitch for people looking for advice, and if it seems like it gets under my skin when someone gives incorrect information, thats because it does....

You also have more offset than you did with the stock wheels. I think 4x4RangerGuy eluded to that with the stock ones it is a no go.
