Anyone with pats knowledge please help

The 4.0 is a 98, they are both manuals. The 3.0 is a 99. I looked up and down where the big square connector plugs in and I noticed one missing on the 4.0s engine harness compared to the 3.0s, but then I noticed some extra ones.. How do I move a pin and how do I know which is a crank wire?

I got the 4.0 with an auto tranny wire harness, guy I bought it from said it's a 98 and the block and head stamps show that.

At the junkyard I found a 98 4.0 manual tranny ranger so I took it's PCM, and tranny harness not the engine harness, I'm thinking about going back and grabbing the engine harness off that one, and hoping it works.. And hoping it's still there. There was some wires cut I noticed but I'm sure I can splice stuff from the autos wire harness.

Does this seem right? I thought this swap was gonna to be a lot more direct than it is. Really starting to piss me off!

you have a distinct mismatch

So you reckon I gotta get the engine harness too off the manual ranger? I can just splice any connectors that are missing. This may sound crazy but could I run my 3.0s harness and splice the connectors I need that are different? Like the crank sensor (only one I can think of that's got a different plugin) because that one cranks the engine over with the 4.0 manual tranny PCM. I can see though where getting that wire harness from that truck I got the PCM at will possibly work, seeing that my 3.0 manuals harness got the job done, they should be on the same pin configuration

I mean the engine was originally mated to a auto tranny but now I got a manual so i only took the little manual tranny pigtail at the junkyard. I do notice though the auto tranny engine harness has an extra plugin, maybe screwing with the electronics? I have jumped the clutch position sensor so I don't think that's a problem at all

Mixing and matching parts like this gets kind of crazy. For every part that wasn't designed for that system, you increase the number of potential problems. It's part of the reason why I suggested keeping the 3.0.

If the 4.0 PCM is from a manual truck, and the trans is a manual, you shouldn't need to have your clutch pedal switch bypassed. It should work normally. I'd return the switch to stock, and see if it helps.

PATS involves the ignition key, PCM, and something in the column. If any of those parts aren't from the same type of vehicle, you can have issues. I swapped a manual trans into my 3.0, and had PATS deleted from the manual trans PCM, and it still only starts with the PATS key. Won't crank at all with any other key.

It sounds to me like your 3.0 key, and column are looking for a 3.0 PCM, and not finding it. The only way you'll get that fixed, is to have the key reprogrammed. $180ish to get everything reprogrammed sounds about right. Or, you can buy an SCT tuner for $400ish, and have the PATS functions deleted.

Yeah but with the 3.0 harness plugged into the 4.0 PCM it cranks with the theft light flashing, just doesn't start which I wasn't worried about, I knew I'd have to get the key programmed for the pats, but what bothers me is with the 4.0 auto tranny engine wire harness it does not crank, which leads me to believe the manual and auto tranny engine harnesses have different starter wiring. So I need a 4.0 manual tranny engine harness.. Hoping that'll work don't know though

And what year is your ranger ?

Ranger is gone :(. Can I use my 3.0 harness and extend the wires and what not to wherei need them? I'm SOL as far as getting a 4.0 manual engine harness.

Well I plugged in some sensors into the 3.0 harness and then hooked up my obd 2 scan tool and plugged the harness into the 4.0 computer, it was giving me the readings of all the sensors I plugged in and was showing things like the throttle position changing when I moved the throttle, it showed me my iat, coolant temp, etc, and it cranks my truck so I'm gonna use it and extend the wires to sensors that need it. Hopefully this goes alright.... :D let everyone know when I'm done if it's successful.

The reverse lights work too which was not the case with the other harness (even with the manual pigtail)

Can I remove the pats module because 98 rangers don't have pats? And so the computer won't send anything?

Fired her up with the y pipe off.. Super loud but she fires up! Had to do a few mods to the 3.0 wire harness will post later..
