Another Diesel Swap

Today I acquired a running, complete, 2.3L turbo diesel. It was originally installed in a mid '80's Dodge D50, built by Mitsubishi.

From what I can find on line this is the same engine Ford used in the '85-'87 diesel Rangers.

With some work this will be going into my '93. I have the original bellhousing the PO cut off the tranny, I'm hoping to use this to build an adapter to bolt a Jeep T5 tranny behind the engine. The transfer case is still up in the air, as are the differential ratios.

I think factory engine mounts should work. All I have to do is find room for an intercooler.

I'll try to take pics as I go to post when it's done.

Input and suggestions are welcome.
 
You might be able to call some place like Lakewood if you need a cleaner bellhousing adaptation.

I've always heard the Jeep T5's were the weakest of the bunch. I question the credibility of that statement though as alot of Jeepers I know abuse their stuff. Does have the nicest ratio's though from a truck stand point.

I'm always weary of the 4BT swap that gets mentioned. Thats almost 800 lbs of Raw engine, let alone the heavy duty tranny to handle the torque, and the rough unrefined grumble.

I'm under the impression this is leaning towards a DD, and I think it will be a much nicer choise over the 4BT. Yes it's a truck, but the rough chatter and drone is not something I feel like hearing on long drives and most others as well. The radio only goes so far.

If it's a dedicated trail rig the 4BT is a much more likely candidate.

My original plan for this truck was to find a 4BT to swap in. The 3.0 runs so good I can't justify spending the money for the engine.
This Mitsu diesel was as good as free, I just swapped some jeep parts I didn't need. I'd been jonsing for this engine since I first saw it in this guys shop.

The main reason I'm using the T5 is I had it taking up room in my shop. First gear is around 4:1, I figure this will be good for an engine that's a little down on power and let me run a decently high gear in the diffs for milage.

Thanks for the tip on Lakewood, I'll look them up.

agreed, I doubt you'd be able to kill it.
