AAARGH! Timing chain woes & Mobil 1

this thread is starting to make me worried lol

I understand why you are worried. I was considering that if I ever needed to scrap my 94 OHV that I would put in a later model SOHC. Now I am not so hot on that idea.

$1500 later it runs quiet now again. The ONLY good news is that I get a 12K, 12mos. warranty with the work from FORD.

:bawling:

Same here :/ I figured the better top end would be worth the 100k chain replacement but not now.

Sent from the road while ignoring traffic

I wouldn't touch one... especially if I had drop in diesel options like Panama does. :icon_twisted:

The parent's '02 Explorer rattles when it is cold... still trying to get them to just dump the dumb thing and move one.

You guys make it sound like all 4.0 SOHC engines have timing chain problems. Yes a few do, especially 2001 and prior. I know of one guy that has over 300K miles on his 2002 4.0 SOHC engine without any problems with the timing chains. Many more are in the 200K miles range.
It must be human nature for people that have problems make a lot more noise about it than people that do not have problems.

Do you take your truck down to the local mechanic, or even the dealer's shop, just to tell them that nothing is wrong with it?

Sometimes I wish things would break just I will shut up. I get tired of hearing the bitching...... "why won't this damn thing break?" and "why doesn't mine make noise?", etc.

I frequently wish things would finish breaking so I could find the problem.

I am 1 for 1 with personal experiance, I have no good one to brag about.

I guess I should go running around bragging about how the OHV 4.0 it replaced had over twice the milage and no timing chain rattle...

Well, I took my truck into the FORD shop last Wednesday for timing chain issues on my 2001 4.0 SOHC with only 66K. It's now Monday eve and I'm trying to hang in there. At my last phone call to FORD tonite, they said "They were wrapping it up and want to QC it tomorrow, should be done by noon". I OK'd the tensioners and haven't heard back if they put cassettes in or not. $1400+ I was warned...if its the rear expect $2500. So, that's just some of my woes. :bawling:

Another big concern I have is I have been running Mobil 1 since my truck was only 13K when I bought it. I changed it faithfully, even with Mobil 1 filter. So, running Mobil 1 with only 66K miles and I have a major engine problem? What does that say about Mobil 1? I think I'm going to abandon synthetics if they can't do better than that!

I knew the 2000-2001 4.0s had timing chain issues but they usually started around 70-75K. I didn't even get that lucky! I used to run Castrol in my cars for years and years, maybe its time to go back.

the best oil on the planet wouldn't save you from a timing chain problem. they are unrelated.
