A4LD re-build kits

What is the difference in the A4LD re-build kits for the 85-89 years vs. the 90-up years? Is the newer one the kit that would be built to handle the 4.0 so would that be the best kit to use behind a 2.9? also would all the parts from that kit work the same in the older case and valve body?
