A4LD rattling noise and vibration/shudder in OD

When I start up my 90 BII I hear a metallic rattling sound that sounds like the inspection cover on the tranny is loose....but its not. It sounds kinda how my heat shields rattled on my cats before I ripped them off. Then I figured the cat was busted so I replaced it. Still the same rattling noise. I narrowed the noise down to somewhere in the torque converter/bellhousing area. Along with that noise and the fact that when I am on the highway at speed, and when I let off the throttle it seems to vibrate and make a shudder feeling leads me to believe its tranny related.

Is this a common issue?? The fluid has been changed and everything.

Had a similar issue with my '90 B2. Pull the inspection plate, and/or the starter, and check the flexplate for cracks around the crankshaft. Also check that the transmission's bellhousing-to-engine bolts are tight.

i had the same problem mine got to where you had to take it out of gear and rev it almost to redline to get it to go into gear i replaced everything trans, converter, and flex plate

I did not get this fixed. In fact, its getting worse. Before it would make that rattling sound, but go away once it got warmed up. Now it does it all the time and is getting louder.

So you guys think its the flexplate?

mines doing the same thing, my t/c is also leaking from the stud weld, gonna replace that and see what happens, if it doesnt fix it bye bye a4ld, hello 5spd

A ticking type sound when cold, or overheated is the TC. but a cloged filter would do the same.
