? A4LD and front slip yoke leak

Have an 89 Ranger Supercab with A4LD transmission, rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago, shifting fine. However I am experiencing leaks, one which I did some searching and reading about the slip yoke that goes into the transmission. It is definately leaking trans fluid into the u-joint that joins the slip yoke to the drive shaft. I was told the slip yoke is bad and needs to be replaced. I pulled it to look and it does not seem to have a hole or vent like some. It is definately not leaking from the extension housing seal, it is coming from the slip shaft internally into the yoke and onto the u-joint. Some advise to replace the slip yoke, others say it is actually a bushing inside the extension housing. Appreciate any input, tried to read the number on the yoke which appears to be 2249, the third digit very hard to read. I don't want to replace the slip yoke unless that would stop the leak. Also if anyone knows the Spicer number, or the specs, number of teeth etc.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean unless you are driving a 2wd truck and it's leaking past the lip seal on the back of the trans?

can you post some pics? Maybe we can help decipher whats going on and either point you in the right direction or confirm what you think the problem is.

Slip Yoke

I'll try and get some pictures. Talked to a Driveline Specialty driveshaft shop today. He nodded and pointed to the exact area mine is leaking using a shaft as an illustration someone was picking up. He said the splined barrel is pressed onto the yoke and there is actually an oil seal to keep fluid from leaking out. He stated two possible solutions for repair. He said he can separate yoke from shaft and replace seal, or just weld it up on the surface facing where the U-Joint fits. Some vehicles apparently have a vent hole to accomodate the slip joint moving in and out and that can leak as well. Anyway there is always a red drop on the bottom of the yoke, the U-joint area is saturated with fluid and it gets thrown in all directions as the shaft turns, creating an oily mess on the underside about eight inches on both sides of the U-Joint. The rear extension housing seal is bone dry as is the barrel of the slip joint. It is coming internally from the splned barrel into the U-Joint. I had trouble understanding how this was happening but maybe the fact that the part has 290,000 miles has something to do with this problem. I know the A4LD has kind of a reputation but mine went 269,000 miles before I had to rebuild.

I am thinking it could be the bushing for the extension housing is allowing the yoke to wobble around and allowing oil by the rear seal. The extension housing on the back of the tranny is vented with the main housing so there would be no pressure from the splines moving in and out. Maybe a cracked yoke not aware of any hole that is supposed to be there that part of the tranny is full of oil especially when running up hill.
 
Follow up on my problem. The barrel of the slip yoke was leaking into the yoke portion internally so transmission fluid was leaking into the u-joint area where the slip yoke and driveshaft join. After some research and searching this slip yoke is obsolete and no longer available with the 1210 series u-joint. I had a driveline shop weld up the slip yoke and no more leak. Problem solved.
