I've got a '90 Ranger 2.9L w/ A4LD project truck. The original A4LD is toast, but I got a used A4LD, salvaged at about 40K after a full rebuild by a Ford dealership. I got it from the owner's long-term mechanic, so I believe it to be in good condition, along with the torque convertor.

That being said, it's been sitting stored for around 6 years. When I got it I pulled of the torque convertor so it was easier to move, which I sort of regret now. But everything was kept covered, sealed off and clean.

It's finally time to install this unit, and I think I should probably replace the front oil pump seal (the one the the torque convertor shaft slides into). I was careful when I pulled the TC and the seal looks good, but after sitting dry for so long it just seems for the best.

Do you agree, and what else should I consider before installation?

Also, in looking at rockauto.com for parts I see they list a front pump seal, which is what I believe I need, and a front grease seal. So I'm a bit confused. The neck or shaft of the TC is what passes through the seal I'm talking about, if that makes sense.

I would replace it - just for peace of mind. I would also replace the rear main seal on the engine too, esp if it is the 4.0L.

when I put a new flexplate in this past march I replaced both of them.

just my $0.02

I would bet that the rubber part of that seal is gray. If so change it out for sure. Ford had some major problems with the gray seal. Also make sure to put heavy grease on the back side of the seal to hold the garter spring in place while you drive it in. Then stake the alum over the seal. You will see some marks around the seal area where the the alum has been staked already.

Yes, the existing front seal was gray. I got both seals replaced yesterday and am prepping to install it in the truck today. One thing that I noticed is that the bell housings differ slightly. The castings are a bit different, but the bolt pattern is the same. The old unit does have a couple of holes at the very bottom which the new one does not have. But as I recall, those holes are not used. The splash guard holes are all there, I believe. I'll confirm shortly.

I found notes about the new unit, and it's from an '89 Ranger, whereas mine is a '90. Both are two wheel drive. All the connections (fluid, electrical, vacuum, linkage, etc.) appear to be identical. So, I don't think the bell housing difference matters. But I wanted to ask just in case.
