'99 Ranger "lowered" 5.0L AWD to lifted 4wd...

Featured Build Threads

Welp, batting 0 so far on acquiring parts for this. Hit up the pick-n-pull Saturday primarily trying to get the front 4.6L driveshaft and see if I wanted to pull a transfer case.

One day last week I'd run their inventory's listed VINs through a decoder and showed that there were a bunch of 4wds. Also asked about it when I picked up a set of seat tracks one afternoon after work, their system spit out probably about 15 trucks.

Walked around saturday and probably 80% of those were actually 2wd trucks. The couple of 4wds that were there were 5.4L trucks. Possible that they still would have worked if they had the 4R70 instead of the 4R100, but apparently most 5.4s came with the bigger transmission and no good way for me to visually verify it. By the time I had those three trucks located, I didn't really have time to even start pulling a driveshaft.

Looks like I'll be shopping salvage yards around the state. I've located a couple of transfer cases about 1.5 hours away for $100. A couple closer, but over twice the price, so it'll be worth the drive when I can find a weekday to go. Got quote requests off to another yard, similar distance, that might have everything available at one stop, and looks like they are actually open open Saturday mornings.

Also going to see about picking up a Mustang 4.0L manual transmission driveshaft. Possibly the T5 transmission too? Local yard has both. Until I get money set aside for new transmission (probably ~$3500, maybe 4k with shipping and core) I'm going to play around with the truck a little. To satisfy my own curiosity I want to see if the Mustang driveshaft would fit the Ranger with the axle flipped like I had it at one point. If it fits with the AWD transfer case, it would also fit if anyone wanted to heavily lower a 4wd Ranger. Don't know who else would, but still good info. The Mustang trans and driveshaft might also end up in the 86 Parts truck behind the 2.8L. Things are extremely fluid with that truck, but I've always wanted to get my 2.8L back into something and one of those transmissions behind it since I've known about them.
