I bought a 98 Mountaineer 5.0 with 92k miles for 800 bucks to be a donor and just wanted to post this here and ask if anyone has any suggestions as I am starting this in a couple weeks like does and don'ts, I assume I should have everything I will need from the donor, will the Ranger radiator support work with the v8 radiator? Do I need to change my torsion bars? Is there any issue with the 5.0 fitting? thanks,,,Neil Kinsley

It sure ought to fit in like it was made to. I's sure take the time to check everything out before it goes in. Wiring harness no breaks in it, motor mounts good (I'd replace), motor need some freshening up, trans and rest of drive train good as is? Just the normal stuff. Not sure about the radiator support. Which type of exhaust manifold came with it? If the tube type, try and find a set of the cast iron ones or buy the Motor Sports ones. I've got both of the Ford wiring diagrams of both if you would need something scanned in, if you run into wiring problems. It's the wiring that causes the most problems.

you will need to install pats from ex into your ranger.or get a 96-97 pcm.

bolt in and enjoy easy 800 buck v8 swap.you can't beat the donor for cost savings

ex means explorer? pcm means what? ecm/ecu ? If so I knew I had to do that, one other thing, would you stick with the 4:11 gears I have in it or switch to whatever is in the mountaineer? They haven't delivered the mountaineer yet, I crawled under it but couldn't read the diff tag, I imagine they are real high though. Oh yea will my driveshaft work or will it be too long?..Neil

the ex (explorer) shaft must be used.pcm is ecu after 1996 (94 really)powertrain control module (controls trans too) .engine control unit (just engine)

thanks for the info....Neil

any opinions on which transfer case I should use , the full time unit out of the Mountaineer or the part time unit out of the Ranger?

swap update

so far everything looks like it will fit, the only problem I have found is the fact that the ranger 3.0 has a single fuel line coming from the tank where the mountaineer has a dual fuel line setup. I am going to have to drop the tanks and figure a way to make the Mountaineer lines work not sure what that will be until I see whats what. more to come...Neil

ronmorrisperformance.com has stock ford fittings.

use the single in out explorer fuel filter, then take the left over line from you 3 line ranger filter and use that as a return.you may end up having to drop the tank to dissconect the intank regulator as it is a 60 psi unit and the explorer rail regulator is a 40 psi.the lines unplug nicley by the master cyl.remove the ffv unit on the frame rail.its a restriction

thanks for the tip I will check that out tomorrow, I am getting mixed feedback concerning the pats system my 98 Ranger doesn't have it I think the 98 Mountaineer has it will this be an issue, I have been told both so far, I read on another forum that pre 01 were pretty much plug and play, or I can just wait and see and let everyone know what happens in a week or so...Neil

as i posted eariler as far as i know the 98 pcm needs the pats handshake.so either install the ex pats or get a non pats pcm from a 96-97.but you can always try the 98 pcm and let us know what happens.you got nothing to loose.you have the whole ex to steal parts from any way

right now I am working on the fuel pump/return line issue, I ran the return line from the Mountaineer (am waiting for a compression bulkhead connector should be here tomorrow) my big question right now is what do I need to do about the fuel pump? Remember mine has a 3.0 pump in it someone said just unplug the regulator, not sure about that one or can I put the V8 pump in it? I haven't taken the cover off the tank yet to see what's what I am going to do that when the connector comes, I have everything ready up front to put the engine in tomorrow ( I hope) then I will have to see about drive shaft length to see if I have to cut some off of mine which is what I expect because the V8 plus tranny plus Xfer case looks to me to be slightly longer then the V6 stuff,,thanks, later,Neil

Is your ranger rear track-loc or open, if its open and the exploder is trak-loc id go with the explorer rear... i just put one in my truck but mine had a penut 7.5 open
