95 ford ranger 4 cyl on 22s?

thanks

i went to a mechanic he said it was my clutch.. so imma replace my clutch and if its still givin me the same prob then ill swap the gears

Um, you're clutch is toast because 1.) You need to RE-GEAR and, 2.) You need to learn to drive it right... It's not that the gears are making the RPM's jump, but you are slipping the clutch way too much (more than likely because you have taller than stock tires on your truck) and need to re gear, and don't slip the clutch... You shouldn't have even have to raise your engine RPM's to get going... Just let out the clutch till it catches, then slowly ease on the gas once the clutch is 90% engaged... I see too many young drivers do that, they rev it all the way up to 1500RPM to get the vehicle going and that's why you have to replace your clutch every 6 months...

I wonder if you can hook a pressure guage to tell you how much your clutch is engauged. It may tell you other things then that too. Just a thought.

When you put in a new clutch make sure you have the flywheel machined to remove hot spots. Just sanding will not remove the hardened spots and could cause the clutch to burn up again or chatter. Don't buy the cheap clutch and pressure plate. I use a Centerforce I clutch and disc kit. http://www.centerforce.com/

Thank you beanmachine and scotts 90.

Gears will help drivability but that aint gonna cause anything like what he was describing which was a slipping clutch.

it won't give you the same problem.

It will be slow to accelerate, but having taller gears will not make your rpm's jump in any way, shape, or form.

Your clutch was shot, make sure to replace everything, don't skimp on it. Machine or replace your flywheel.

If you decide the truck is too slow or dogging too much, then get new gears.

gettin my clutch swapped today mechanic called me and told me that my slave cylinder wasnt engaging right so it tore my clutch up he said my flywheel was ok and sanded it also told me to buy a new slave cylinder .. all in all 180 labor 50 bucks for the slave cylinder .. clutch kit has lifetime warranty

not bad what name clutch is he putting in? prob a fenco or something

With all this talk of gears and shifting .By any chance did the guy who sold you the rims and tires tell ya about this . Tire calculator . Sure the rims are huge and the ruber side wall is short. But what really matters is over all height .And if they are over size .......better put some new brakes on it to . If you ever had to use a braker bar before you may understand it then . The bigger the wrench the easier it is to loosen or over tighten . Now with taller tires. The harder the brakes will need to be pushed and the pads and rotors over heat.

So check this out ..... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I remmber those ricers when they had the rims and tires sticking out the wheel wells. Now its bigger rims and no side wall. Here in michigan we have road joints that kill the ride.

hey

ok fixed my clutch feels good but now it feels like my clutch pedal is really soft and its really hard for me to engage the gears driving and even worst parked my pedal was never this soft so im concerned that he didnt do something right.. i have a hot ass date tomorrow and id hate to have us get stranded somewhere due to my carelessness.. please help a guy out // is that the way a clutch is supposed to feel?

a hydraulic clutch should be easy to press. could be the aftermarket clutch has a little weaker pressure plate than the factory one. as long as everything feels like it's engaging properly i wouldn't worry about it. But the problems getting into gear sounds like the mechanic didnt bleed the system properly after working on it. take it back and have them bleed the system again.
also in response to red ryders comment... try slamming on the brakes when theres no chance of jeapordizing anyones saftey (maybe an empty parking lot). if you can lock the brakes up they are fine. everyone seems to like to go overkill on the brakes. bigger brakes are not always better. If you're not going huge on tire size and not hauling any ridiculous loads the stock brake setup should be more than sufficient. Sounds like alot of the info given to you in this thread is misleading. Bigger wheels dosen't mean you need a re-gear or biger brakes. As has been said allready, what matters is over-all tire height. I'm fairly certain you're running a low-profile tire with those wheels, so you're actual tire size is probably very close to stock. Worry about the clutch for now and consider gears and brakes after driving for a bit.

one more thing...If you do decide to go with a different ratio in the rear drop me a line. I've got a rear end with 3.73 gears i'd almost give to you just to get it out of my yard. haha. so if you're in the neighbor hood you know who to call.

thanks

yea most definitly .. my truck is runni a hell of a lot better now it was my clutch and slave cylinder.. im looking for a dome light i just finished my headliner and need the light to complete the job .. my truck is lookin pretty nice . im the only ranger down here in south tx with 22s just need paint now :yahoo:
