91 ranger 4.0l with 92 explorer ecm

Sequential would have a cam sensor where bank just the crank sensor, I don't know the year range but usually around '94 especially on california models

Idk from what I can tell I got the truck with original or at least new old stock ford ecm it went bad so I got another from a rolled manual explorer that ran good. As for the wiring it’s all factory still. How could I tell if any had been swapped or changed?

look at the wiring on the fuel injectors. sequential may or may not have a cam sensor. bank fire will not have a cam sensor.

bank fire is only wired in at pin 57 and 58.

there is data in the tech library

Does anybody know what this set of wires and sensor does it’s on the passenger side of the transmission they got ripped off at some point probably by a stick. Also checked my fuel pressure again and I’m getting 10 psi key on not running and about 28-30 while idle if and Erving up to 2500-3000

thats indicative of fuel pressure regulator issues or pump....

nss may be grounded. making it think its in neutral.

So I unplugged the fuel pressure regulator and plugged off the vacuum at the tree and it runs exactly the same. (Only ran a few minutes like this.) is that a way to test it or??

The nss is on three switches the pink pair is on when I start it and I leave it on while driving (on as in the circuit is complete) I’ve tried it on or off and no change also the other two have just been left off. I would like to figure out what is happening before I start cleaning up my wiring.

how fast does the psi fall off key off from running?

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me with the pressure you are describing. I have not seen any Ranger from the early 90's that had a rev limiter at 3000rpm in any gear.

I believe the wires in your picture are for the transmission neutral switch.

i suspect the tach is off a bit if it hits the limiter. my tach gets twitchy sometimes with the 4.0... hits sometimes at 4200 others 5 g or sometimes not at all and just valve float...

no way to datalog it with the setup i have so i just live with it.

thank you for getting back to me. If I step on the gas in neutral and just hold it lightly like I’m trying to hit 4,000 ish it won’t go past 3,000 but if I slam the pedal to the floor it stutters at 3,000 and quickly shoots up to 5,000. Not just on the tach i can make it do that in only first gear and in low ranger through third.

If I have it in first gear and I slam the pedal down it will hit 3,000 and stutter or violently lurch till eventually it goes past and you can hear it because it opens up and screams like it just hit nitrous in a movie

Definitely leaking somewhere then. It should hold pressure for a very long time. At least overnight.
