ok i have a 99 ranger 4x4.. it has the ABS/VSS from Rear Axle speedometer system .. the v8 is from a 96 Exp. with complete wiring harness with would use the speed sensor on the output shaft of the transmission.. i'm using the AOD out of my 88 ranger that i did a v8 in 4 yrs ago.. so what i'm looking for is.. how do a go about this.. can i just leave everything go on the ranger and the speedo and ABS will work and then just plug the computer from the 96 Exp. into the speed sensor on the trans? or is there a nightmare mod i have to do? Please anyone that can help please do!

Unless you have the 4 cyl ranger (which I don't think they made in a 4 cyl platform) you will first have to deal with PATS, which the 96 explorer did not have, which means you will have a lot to swap over to delete the PATS out of the ranger. If you are using an overdrive trans, you should stay with the 4R70W trans from the explorer, without it the ECU will be looking for it and it will run really bad and throw all kinds of codes...The VSS from the rear axle is run through the GEM module in the dash (behind the radio of the left side) and it should work. I know you can't pick and choose sometimes, but you would have been better using a 98+explorer for your swap, but you can still make it work...If you don't have the 4R70W trans from the explorer, you will need to get a tuner like SCT to delete the trans from the ECU's memory programming, which you can also use the same tuner to adjust your speedo :icon_thumby:
SVT

The VSS signal should be going to the 42 pin connector regardless of where the signal is coming from. So I wouldn't worry about it. You'll likely want to plug the hole in the trans, an extra VSS would do a good job for this.

ok so i will have to deal with the pats .. could i just get into it and trun it off ? ... i an able to get use of a the full power of a Ford deals shop ;) ... and what if i use and newer E-AOD trans... i have over $700 into the AOD in my 88 Ranger and hate to scrap it .. i do have a 95 E-AOD at the shop to could swap in the valvebody and stuff

Your wires for the trans should plug right in but I would check that the wires in the plugs match up with the way the trans is wired to its plug. In other words make sure that the wire in the plug for the TFT is going to the wire in the trans for the TFT and so on. Other then that it should work.

ok so that leaves me with at PATS to worry about ... I though since the PATS is in and works .. when i put the ECM in that doesn't use PATS it wouldn't not matter ...

You are correct. Using the 96 PCM disables PATS. You MAY have to do some minor electrical changes or maybe not. Get copies of the EVTM's (Ford Wiring Manuals) for the engine donor and the Ranger and compare the starting circuits. These manuals are cheap on eBay.

The 99 Ranger had 2 different ABS systems. Some had RABS and the speedometer correction was done in the GEM. Others had the 4WABS option and the speedo correction was done in the 4WABS Module. If I had to guess, I'd say that your 4x4 probably has 4 wheel but I'm not 100% sure.

In any case, the corrected VSS output (gray/black wire) from whichever module it is should be usable as-is by the PCM as well as your stock Ranger speedometer, cruise control, etc. You can simply use that signal in place of the one that was sourced from the gear driven signal generator on the original 96 transmission, also gray/black.

Thanks everyone ... been very helpful ... will bee starting on it this coming week so watch for more problems! lol
