Starting from the beginning.... 2.9L 6cylinder 59,000 miles on it. Last fall on my way home, she started to sputter then cough. I turned into a driveway to get back home and she stalled when i put it into neutral to backup. She started right back up, driving home she was coughing and sputtering but ran true when i layed into the gas. Parked her in the driveway, the following morning i started it right up and she sputtered for a brief moment then ran smooth. I shifted to reverse backed out of my driveway and as i threw in the clutch she died instantly right there in the middle of the road. Hooked the winch up to my Subaru and pulled her back into the driveway and there shes been resting since. She turns over strong but absolutely no sign of firing. I checked my points on the cap, replaced the cap, then tried the fuel pump.. realized it wasn't those after trying some starting fluid in the intake. no sign of a cough or anything... i pulled a spark plug today and held it to the frame, i got no spark. She was as healthy as a horse before this came up. I'm at a dead end and need help or SHES gonna make me send HER to a boneyard soon

I would suspect a bad coil if no spark.

TFI module...

Might check the engine to frame ground, I had an 88 2.9 that wouldn't start , no spark, ended up running another ground and that fixed it.

ignition coil and/or ignition module. also might see if there is a bad wire some where shorting to ground.

Mitch I just had the same problem you described. I'm not familiar with the 2.9L setup, but a new ignition control module (TFI module) fixed my no fire issue. My control module was located behind the distributor facing the firewall. Autozone has a special tool to make removing it a lot easier.
