'84 ranger 2.8L 4x4 build thread

yeah thatd be sweet! i started working at china peak again, so if im not working id definitely be up for that, not sure if i have the power/gears for snow but i should be getting lower gears soon

ok so iv been trying to figure out this really bad eletrical short that iv had going on for a while now and i think i have it figured out.... im pretty sure it is this thing

i had problems with it a long time ago and i went to carquest to get a replacement one, i think that the part is discontinued or something so the replacement one was from a newer ranger and im thinking that it might not be exactly right? i took it off of the truck and if the battery isnt dead tomorrow morning then ill know for sure that it was the problem... but for now, has anyone had trouble with this part before? or does anyone know where to get one that has the original part number?

here are some more pics of it in case someone needs to see some more of what im talking about

this is the part of the harness it is in, the bundle goes to the computer in the cab on this side

and to the starter solenoid on this end, its actually connected to the main power line to the computer

so i got great deal on axles! i got my buddy's HP dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25in for 700 bucks! from it im getting a high pinion, 4.56 ratios, a stronger rear end, a VERY tight L/S in the rear and both axles have less than 2k miles on em after a professional rebuild. im fuggin happy! so now ill be able to afford a front locker sooner than i thought... im thinkin that running a front locker and the L/S out back will get me where i want to go.

Does your truck have to get emissions testing or not? I see your in Cali. but not sure that it has passed recently seeing that alot of the wires arent hooked up. Most of those wires are for the computer/exhaust emissions stuff. If you dont have it then I would look into Durasparking it all.

it passed like 8 months ago with the same wires disconnected

I see that you have used what looks to chain as limit straps for your front axle. Care to go into details on that? Im looking for a cheap way to make limit straps. Also how have the CV joint front axles been working out?

the chains work out great! ill post pics of where and how i attach them tomorrow if ya want, and as far as the CV axles go i havent really put enough miles on em to give a real answer but so far no problems... my new axles are just traditional u-joints though

I have been running the CV joint axles since I got my D30, came with it, but have a set of ujoint ones that just need new ujoints put in them. The CV hold up fine but the damn rubber boots are the down fall.

I would love to see pics of how you hooked, made, etc... the limit straps. Chain isnt that expensive and I see it lasting forever.

Ahhh... Sorry, I completely forgot to get a picture of the chains today... I'll try again tomorrow :D

Sorry, iv been really busy with work... But I took a picture! I basically bolt the chain to the top coil bucket and to the swaybar bracket

went and picked up my axles! i have to take the shafts out of the parts d30 and put em in the new one, that and moving the rear spring pads are the only things ive gotta do till i bolt em in... but im thinking of making a little truss for my front axle... i might not even need it but who cares, it looks cool and is fun to build

Can I ask why you went with a low pinion 1999+ cherokee axle?

The new one? Or my old one? Cause the new one is a pre 98 high pinion and my old one is a 1998 grand Cherokee low pinion, I only got that cause I didn't know any better at the time

spring is here. Got a wheelin trip with the buds at the end of July. Maybe you'll be around little buddy.

Yes sir ill be around! i actually already got a trip to bald mtn in last weekend! but iv got a lot to update...

so i swapped in my new axles and WOW huge difference in performance!

i also made a toolbox and mounted a spare tire... i also got my first ticket for not having mud flaps... i hate how they look but iv gotta have em i guess.

im halfway done making some tube doors and i put in rear speakers, i dont have any pictures of that yet though. i didnt really change anything suspension wise when i installed the new axles, but the 4:56s and posi rear end helped soooo much on my last trip! i could do a lot harder lines and actually didnt find anything on bald mnt that i couldnt do...

here are some pics of my last trip, my buddy just bought a '74 CJ-5... its cute i guess haha

the day started off with me finding my buddy at the gas station leaking gas all over the place... and hes new at this so i fixed it for him

iv got some really cool videos of me doing posi hill on bald mtn but im having a hard time uploading them, i did both of the hard lines in under 3 minutes:icon_bounceblue:

and a couple of days after my trip, the fan clutch went out so i was over heating... its been out of commission for the past week but i should be fixing it on sunday as well as putting in a rear gas tank! i know that some rangers had a rear tank, and possibly the B2 tanks work? any info on that would be great... :icon_thumby:
