Couldn't be more wrong. I've had a steel cover supposedly from an F150 and it didn't fit on my ranger 8.8. I tried a chrome mustang one and same thing. I ended up needing a 1/4" spacer so that the cover wouldn't hit the ring gear.

BTW Mine started life with a composite cover.

Well you hade the wrong covers then.....all 8.8's use the same cover and gears.....the only difference is the Explorers, F-150's, and Expidition's have 31 spline axles.....the Mustang's use 28 spline axles like the Rangers.....8.8 axle housings are all the same.....

i can vouch for that, are you sure yours wasnt a 7.5, the 7.5s some come with fiberglass cover, no 8.8s come with a composit cover.

No, this appears to be true.

Where the cover bolts up on my Ranger 8.8 does appear to be ¼" closer in than on the Explorer 8.8 in my BII. I suspect it's because of the smaller tube radius due to it being 28 spline.
I would think a Mustang cover should fit fine though (after all, it's also 28 spline).
Most cast aftermarket covers should fit as well (the finned AL one I have fit no problem).

(and yes, some (most Ranger?) 8.8s did come with composite covers (mine also had one).

sorry, i didnt think composite one were ever on 8.8. i have an axle guide here and it says only 7.5s had em, i will have to choke those who wrote it! sorry again!

yep i had the same thing happen using a cover from an f-150 so i'm still running the plastic crap.good excuse to make one from 3/16" or 1/4" plate :icon_welder:

so if i pull a 8.8 cover off an f150, for my 8.8 axle out of a 92 ranger the dif cover is going to be a 1/4 deeper correct? or is it IDENTICAL to mine? a few of the posts sorta confused me lol

no your gears will grind it.

We ordered a chrome cover for our drag car at work and it hit the ring gear aswell
