8.8 covers, all the same fit?

well, i guess i'll see what happens with mine. it is a 8.8 with composite cover, 28 spline. that would bite to pay 150+ for a cover that doesnt fit. i'll edit a pic in later. dont know when i'll get a chance to try the cover. got to make a run to my folks for a torque wrench and get some oil first.

just wondering what are the bolts on the out side of the cover for?

The ones with red paint on the ends are preload bolts that tighten against the carrier bearing caps (helps to reduce gear deflection while under load, good if you got lots of HP and/or deep gears & big tires).
Be sure to seal up the nuts & threads with RTV when you install it so they don't leak.

Ahem!...if it is relavent my 93 8.8 rear end has A COMPOSITE diff cover!! How do I know? Because I just installed rear axle seals and when I went to pry the cover off I almost broke it...it is FOR SURE a plastic cover.

got it changed out, fits nicely. kit came with stainless hardware. used teflon tape on everything. (hey later im keeping the cover when the truck gets "retired", want to be able to remove it) got a deal on 80w 90 at meijers, had valvoline durablend reguarly 5.95 on closeout special for 2.95. bought 7 quarts. this cover did increase capacity slightly. stock refill was 5 pints (2 - 1/2 qts) when i refilled it it took just under 3 qts. gears looked really good for having 114K miles on them.

My 8.8" plate is composite... (just to add to that knowledge)

all the trouble to put those coils in there, you should have taken the leafs out and installed a trac bar...

i can vouch for that, are you sure yours wasnt a 7.5, the 7.5s some come with fiberglass cover, no 8.8s come with a composit cover.

Yes they did..........mine had one!

yes it could use new shocks, those are the oringinals. the coil helpers went in real easy, the "hardest" part was torching the factory blocks off of the bump stops. i made new ones inside the coils. igot rid of the factory spare cradle last night. moved the spare to inside the box the first week i got it. my next thing to do is replace the r.r. wheel cylinder, its leaking fluid past the seals. by the time i got a hone and repair kit i might as well just get the wheel cylinder. its not losing alot, ive probly went through a 1/2 pint of brake fluid in the past month. its starting to make a noticeable mess though. ( and i have no r.r. brake due to the shoes being soaked)

damn......u guys got bad rust problems around ur arear, mine had no rust on the underside and its a jersey truck...i guess the oil coating everything helped from the 2.9 LOL

i just recently did my yearly spring rust removal and repaint of the receiver hitch, i also was knocking rust off the rear spring hangers and i have a hole clear through the left rear one. before many more years pass, those coil helpers might be the whole rear suspension and the leaf pack will merly be trailering arms like the old-school chevrolet 1/2 tons.
